Buying a SIM Card at Istanbul Airport (IST) in 2026: Why I Don't Recommend It
Flying to Istanbul Airport (IST) and wondering if you should buy a prepaid SIM card on arrival? You can, but in 2026 I do not recommend buying a SIM card at Istanbul Airport. Tourist SIM card prices at IST are shockingly expensive and there are much cheaper ways to stay connected in Turkey.
The cheapest prepaid SIM card I found at Istanbul Airport starts at around 1,935 TL (~$42 USD), which is honestly ridiculous. Even buying a local prepaid SIM card in Istanbul city center is usually cheaper than at the airport, but in 2026 the cheapest SIM card for tourists in Turkey is actually an eSIM.
That is why I recommend travelers to install an eSIM for Turkey before flying. It is cheaper, faster, easier and you are connected as soon as the plane lands, without having to deal with overpriced airport SIM card shops, passport registration or waiting in line after a long flight.
This Istanbul Airport SIM card guide shows you where the SIM card shops are located, the latest 2026 tourist SIM card prices, which operator has the cheapest airport SIM and why an eSIM is now the best value option for most travelers visiting Turkey.
Last update: May 2026.
Quick Recommendation - Istanbul Airport SIM Card 2026
💰 Price indication: Airport SIM cards at Istanbul Airport start from around 1,935 TL (~$42 USD). Turkey eSIMs are usually cheaper.
📍 Can you buy a SIM card at Istanbul Airport? Yes, there are multiple SIM card shops in the arrivals hall and they are open 24 hours.
💳 Best physical SIM card at Istanbul Airport: Turk Telekom. Their cheapest tourist SIM is now 20 GB data-only for 1,935 TL (~$42 USD).
📲 Best value for tourists: install an eSIM for Turkey before your trip. In 2026, eSIMs are often cheaper than airport SIM cards and even cheaper than many city center tourist SIM card deals.
🌍 My honest advice: do not buy a SIM card at Istanbul Airport unless you really need a physical SIM immediately after landing. For most travelers, an eSIM is cheaper, faster and much easier.

Arriving at Istanbul Airport (IST)

Welcome to Istanbul Airport (IST) which has the ambition to become one of the biggest airports in the world. The 'new' Istanbul Airport opened its doors in 2018 and is obviously very modern and super spacious.
IST Airport is incredibly big and distances are long, sometimes very long. It is a busy airport, and its wide open spaces makes it a beautiful and easy going airport, but be prepared to walk.
Most cringe about IST Airport is that they still offer limited free WiFi. In 2026 there is now free WiFi for all passengers arriving/departing on Turkish Airlines flights, all other passengers need to scan their passport at a machine to get 1 hour free WiFi.
There is only one International Arrival Hall. After you went through passport control you get to a huge Baggage Claim Hall. There are ATM's, money changers and Duty Free shops, but no sim card shops in the baggage claim area, they are in the arrival hall.

Should you buy a SIM card at Istanbul Airport?
In my opinion, no, you should not buy a SIM card at Istanbul Airport unless you really need a physical prepaid SIM card immediately after landing and your phone does not support eSIMs.
Yes, buying a SIM card at Istanbul Airport is easy. There are multiple SIM card shops in the arrivals hall, they are open 24 hours and staff will help you activate everything on the spot. But the problem is simple: tourist SIM card prices at Istanbul Airport are very expensive.
Even the cheapest prepaid SIM card at IST Airport, the Turk Telekom 20 GB data-only SIM card for 1,935 TL (~$42 USD), is still not cheap compared to Turkey eSIM deals you can buy online before your trip.
That is why I recommend most travelers to install a Turkey eSIM before flying. According to my latest Turkey eSIM comparison, the Nomad eSIM for Turkey is my top recommendation for most travelers. Nomad offers 20 GB for $21 USD and 50 GB for $31 USD, which is much better value than buying a tourist SIM card at Istanbul Airport.
If you only need a smaller data package, the SimOptions Turkey eSIM is the cheapest reliable 10 GB option for around $13 USD. If you want unlimited-style data, Sim Local is the best unlimited eSIM for Turkey because it has the most generous fair use policy.
The biggest advantage of an eSIM is that you can install it before departure and connect as soon as you land. No waiting in line, no passport registration at an airport SIM card shop and no overpriced tourist SIM card packages after a long flight.
Bottom line: only buy a SIM card at Istanbul Airport if you specifically need a physical SIM card right away. For most tourists traveling to Turkey in 2026, an eSIM for Turkey is cheaper, easier and much better value.
Where to buy a SIM card at Istanbul Airport (IST)?

There are 5 different sim card shops at Istanbul Airport and they sell more or less the same prepaid sim cards for Turkey for tourists. The prices different a little, so keep reading and I tell you where you can find the best tourist sim card at Istanbul Airport.
After you collect your luggage from the luggage belts in the baggage claim area there is only one exit. Through sliding doors you will end up in the massive arrival hall and you are forced to go either left or right.
If you walk to the right you see Burger King on your right hand side and in front of you you will see: Njoy Local SIM and WIFIST. Njoy is a Turk Telekom reseller store and the 'Vodafone'/WIFIST sells of course Vodafone prepaid sim cards but also Turkcell sim cards. Don't be fooled by the signs this is NOT an official Vodafone store.

If you walk to the left you will see the all the phone stores of all the main mobile internet provider in Turkey: Turkcell, Vodafone and Turk Telekom. In these phone stores you can now also get eSIMs as per 2026.
All sim card shops at Istanbul Airport are open for 24 hours. Only the official phone stores from Turkcell, Turk Telekom and Vodafone offer eSIMs, all other stores only have physical prepaid sim cards for tourists available.
But if you want an eSIM for Turkey then check out my complete guide with the best eSIMs for Turkey in 2026 and find much cheaper deals.
There is also an Airport WIFI rental company. The Turkey prepaid sim card business is booming. Never have I seen an airport with so many mobile internet shops. You must think: great that means competitive prices... but NO, unfortunately not!
{ruxin_related_articles}Prices for tourist SIM cards at Istanbul Airport in 2026
Recently I personally checked the latest tourist SIM card prices at Istanbul Airport (IST), and although some prices have changed, the conclusion is still the same: buying a SIM card at Istanbul Airport is expensive.
Most SIM card shops at Istanbul Airport show prices in Turkish Lira, Euro and USD. However, the foreign currency prices displayed at the airport are often much worse than the real exchange rate. Therefore, I strongly recommend paying in Turkish Lira by card or cash.
Turk Telekom store Istanbul Airport

The official Turk Telekom store currently has the cheapest physical prepaid SIM card at Istanbul Airport. If you really want to buy a tourist SIM card at IST Airport, this is the one I recommend.
- 20 GB data-only = 1,935 TL (~$42 USD)
- 25 GB data + 750 local minutes + 750 local SMS = 2,365 TL (~$52 USD)
- 55 GB data + 750 local minutes + 750 local SMS + free social media + free WhatsApp = 2,900 TL (~$63 USD)
- 105 GB data + 750 local minutes + 750 local SMS + free social media + free WhatsApp = 3,030 TL (~$66 USD)
The 20 GB data-only package for 1,935 TL (~$42 USD) is the best physical SIM card deal at Istanbul Airport right now. It is still expensive compared to eSIMs for Turkey, but if you insist on buying a prepaid SIM card after landing, this is the best option.
Turkcell store Istanbul Airport

Turkcell is known for having the strongest mobile network in Turkey, especially outside the big cities. However, Turkcell SIM cards at Istanbul Airport are still much more expensive than eSIMs.
- 25 GB data = 2,550 TL (~$56 USD)
- 50 GB data = 2,700 TL (~$59 USD)
- 100 GB data = 2,995 TL (~$66 USD)
- 200 GB data = 3,175 TL (~$69 USD)
Turkcell also has prepaid SIM card plans for tourists with data + calls, but they are even more expensive.
If you want the best network coverage and do not mind paying airport prices, Turkcell is a good choice. But for most tourists, these plans are still not good value compared to ordering an eSIM before flying to Turkey.
Vodafone store Istanbul Airport

Vodafone tourist SIM cards at Istanbul Airport are also expensive. All plans include local minutes, local SMS and unlimited social media, but the prices are much higher than online eSIM deals for Turkey.
- 20 GB data + 750 local minutes + 250 local SMS = 3,200 TL (~$70 USD)
- 50 GB data + 750 local minutes + 250 local SMS = 4,100 TL (~$90 USD)
- 80 GB data + 750 local minutes + 250 local SMS = 4,900 TL (~$107 USD)
- 100 GB data + 750 local minutes + 250 local SMS = 5,900 TL (~$129 USD)
- Unlimited data + local calls + local SMS = 9,500 TL (~$208 USD)
The Vodafone tourist SIM card prices at Istanbul Airport are very high. Unless you specifically want Vodafone and need a physical SIM card immediately, I would skip these plans.
Njoy SIM Istanbul Airport

Njoy SIM is a Turk Telekom reseller at Istanbul Airport. Although it sells tourist SIM cards that use the Turk Telekom network, the prices are different from the official Turk Telekom store.
- 10 GB data + 250 local minutes + 250 local SMS = 2,700 TL (~$59 USD)
- 25 GB data + 750 local minutes + 750 local SMS = 2,950 TL (~$65 USD)
- 50 GB data + 1,500 local minutes + 1,500 local SMS = 3,300 TL (~$72 USD)
- 75 GB data + 2,250 local minutes + 2,250 local SMS = 3,500 TL (~$77 USD)
The Njoy SIM prices are not attractive compared to the official Turk Telekom store. The official Turk Telekom store sells a 20 GB data-only SIM card for 1,935 TL (~$42 USD), while Njoy starts at 2,700 TL (~$59 USD) for only 10 GB.
WIFIST / Vodafone reseller Istanbul Airport

WIFIST is a Vodafone reseller at Istanbul Airport. Do not confuse this with the official Vodafone store. The plans are different and the pricing is also different.
- 20 GB data + 750 local minutes + 250 local SMS + unlimited social media = 2,950 TL (~$65 USD)
- 50 GB data + 750 local minutes + 250 local SMS + unlimited social media = 3,300 TL (~$72 USD)
- 80 GB data + 750 local minutes + 250 local SMS + unlimited social media = 3,600 TL (~$79 USD)
- 100 GB data + 750 local minutes + 250 local SMS + unlimited social media = 4,000 TL (~$87 USD)
WIFIST is cheaper than the official Vodafone store for similar data packages, but still more expensive than the official Turk Telekom 20 GB data-only SIM card and much more expensive than most Turkey eSIMs.
My conclusion: if you really want to buy a physical prepaid SIM card at Istanbul Airport, go to the official Turk Telekom store and buy the 20 GB data-only package for 1,935 TL (~$42 USD). But for most tourists, an eSIM for Turkey is still the cheaper and easier option.
Istanbul Airport SIM card price comparison
To make it easier to compare all tourist SIM card prices at Istanbul Airport, here is a quick overview of the cheapest available SIM card packages from every shop in the arrivals hall.
Prices are shown in Turkish Lira with an approximate USD conversion based on the current exchange rate. Always try to pay in Turkish Lira, because the Euro and USD prices displayed at the airport are often less favorable.
| Shop | Network | Cheapest package | Price | Traveltomtom verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Turk Telekom | Turk Telekom | 20 GB data-only | 1,935 TL (~$42 USD) | Best physical SIM card deal at Istanbul Airport |
| Turkcell | Turkcell | 25 GB data-only | 2,550 TL (~$56 USD) | Best network, but more expensive than Turk Telekom |
| Njoy SIM | Turk Telekom | 10 GB + 250 local minutes + 250 SMS | 2,700 TL (~$59 USD) | More expensive than the official Turk Telekom store |
| WIFIST / Vodafone | Vodafone | 20 GB + local minutes + SMS + unlimited social media | 2,950 TL (~$65 USD) | Cheaper than official Vodafone, but still poor value |
| Vodafone | Vodafone | 20 GB + 750 local minutes + 250 SMS | 3,200 TL (~$70 USD) | Very expensive, not recommended as first choice |
As you can see, the official Turk Telekom store has the cheapest prepaid SIM card at Istanbul Airport. Their 20 GB data-only package for 1,935 TL (~$42 USD) is the best option if you really want a physical SIM card immediately after landing.
However, this is still expensive compared to Turkey eSIMs. For example, the Nomad eSIM for Turkey gives you 20 GB for $21 USD and 50 GB for $31 USD, which is why I recommend an eSIM for most travelers instead of buying a SIM card at Istanbul Airport.
Best SIM card at Istanbul Airport if you really want one
If you really want to buy a physical prepaid SIM card at Istanbul Airport, then the best option is currently the Turk Telekom 20 GB data-only SIM card.
This is the cheapest prepaid SIM card I found at Istanbul Airport during my latest price check. The package gives you 20 GB data for 1,935 TL (~$42 USD). It does not include local calls or SMS, but for most tourists that is not a big deal. Almost everyone uses WhatsApp, Google Maps, Uber, BiTaksi, Instagram, email and hotel booking apps through mobile data anyway.
Compared to the other SIM card shops at Istanbul Airport, Turk Telekom is clearly the best value if you only care about getting connected. Turkcell starts at 2,550 TL (~$56 USD), Njoy SIM starts at 2,700 TL (~$59 USD), WIFIST starts at 2,950 TL (~$65 USD) and Vodafone starts at 3,200 TL (~$70 USD).
That said, I still do not think the Turk Telekom airport SIM card is a great deal. It is simply the best physical SIM card option at Istanbul Airport if you really want to buy one after landing.
For comparison, the Nomad eSIM for Turkey gives you 20 GB for $21 USD and 50 GB for $31 USD. That is why I still recommend most travelers to install an eSIM before flying to Turkey instead of buying an overpriced tourist SIM card at IST Airport.
Bottom line: if your phone does not support eSIM or you really want a physical SIM card immediately after landing, buy the Turk Telekom 20 GB data-only SIM card for 1,935 TL (~$42 USD). Otherwise, get a Turkey eSIM before your trip and save money.
Best eSIM for Turkey: cheaper alternative to Istanbul Airport SIM cards
If your phone supports eSIM, then buying an eSIM for Turkey before your trip is the easiest and cheapest way to stay connected after landing at Istanbul Airport.
Airport SIM card prices at IST are expensive. Even the cheapest physical prepaid SIM card at Istanbul Airport costs 1,935 TL (~$42 USD) for 20 GB data. In comparison, the Nomad eSIM for Turkey gives you 20 GB for $21 USD and 50 GB for $31 USD.
That is why I recommend most travelers to skip the SIM card shops at Istanbul Airport and install a Turkey eSIM before flying. You can set it up at home while connected to WiFi, and once you arrive in Turkey your phone connects automatically to a supported mobile network.
Based on my latest Turkey eSIM comparison, these are my top recommendations:
- Best overall eSIM for Turkey: Nomad - 20 GB for $21 USD or 50 GB for $31 USD. Best balance of price, data allowance, transparency and usability.
- Cheapest reliable 10 GB eSIM: SimOptions - 10 GB for around $13 USD. Best choice if you only need a smaller data package.
- Best unlimited-style eSIM: Sim Local - the best unlimited eSIM for Turkey because it has the most generous Fair Use Policy and access to all three major Turkish networks.
The main advantage of an eSIM is convenience. There is no need to queue at a phone store, no passport registration at the airport, no tourist SIM card sales pressure and no need to pay inflated airport prices.
If you want a full breakdown of all Turkey eSIM plans, prices, networks, Fair Use Policies and discount codes, check my complete guide with the best eSIMs for Turkey in 2026.
Bottom line: for most tourists, an eSIM is a much better deal than buying a SIM card at Istanbul Airport. Only buy a physical SIM card at IST if your phone does not support eSIM or if you specifically need a Turkish SIM card immediately after landing.
My Experience Buying a SIM Card at Istanbul Airport (Video)
Wondering what it actually looks like to buy a prepaid SIM card at Istanbul Airport (IST)? In the video below I walk you through the arrival process, show you where the SIM card stores are located, and explain what you can expect in terms of pricing and setup.
This is a real on-the-ground experience, so you can see exactly how the process works before you decide whether to buy at the airport or install an eSIM instead.
Turkey SIM cards and traveling in Europe
Although Istanbul is partially located in Europe, it is NOT part of the EU and therefore you can NOT use your Turkey SIM card data for traveling in Europe.
If you buy a local prepaid SIM card in Turkey there is NO international roaming included on any of the tourist SIM cards.
However, there is a great alternative: the Eurolink eSIM from Airalo. This eSIM is valid in both Europe and Turkey and is a perfect solution for travelers visiting Turkey and Europe on one trip.
For more info about Europe SIM cards check out Traveltomtom's list of the best sim card for Europe travel in 2026.
Pocket WiFi for Turkey

On your left-hand side when you walk into the Arrival Hall you will also find a store Airport Wifi Rental shop. Here they rent out Pocket Wifis and for $16 USD per day you get unlimited data. You can connect up to 10 devices at the same time. Sounds cool, but keep in mind that you all share the same connection, so data speed will drop drastically the more devices you connect. You will have to pay a $50 USD deposit for the pocket WiFi.
For some people, especially those with locked phones this is a solution to stay connected when traveling to Istanbul. Check out my HONEST review about these portable WiFi devices. I am not a fan! This is so old school!
How to get from Istanbul Airport to Istanbul city center
You can take a regular taxi to the city which will cost around 1,700 TL ($38 USD) and takes between 40-60 minutes depending on traffic and where you go in the city.
I recommend you to download Bitaxi, the leading Taxi App in Turkey, but Uber also works. A ride to Taksim, Galata, Besiktas, etc. it will cost the same but there is less chance to get ripped off. Because unfortunately taxis in Istanbul are the worst ever and they love scamming tourists.

There are of course also busses and damn they are convenient. Go to the -2 floor and get one of the HavaIST busses. They have several stops in the popular tourist districts of Istanbul and you only pay 310 TL ($7 USD) for a ticket. You can buy a ticket in the bus with your credit card.
FAQ – SIM Card at Istanbul Airport (IST)

How much is a tourist SIM card at Istanbul Airport in 2026?
Tourist SIM card prices at Istanbul Airport start from 1,935 TL (~$42 USD). This is the cheapest package I found during my latest price check and it is a Turk Telekom 20 GB data-only SIM card. Other SIM card shops at Istanbul Airport are more expensive, with prices starting from around 2,550 TL (~$56 USD) and going up to more than 9,500 TL (~$208 USD) for unlimited data packages.
What is the best SIM card at Istanbul Airport?
If you really want to buy a physical prepaid SIM card at Istanbul Airport, the best option is currently the Turk Telekom 20 GB data-only SIM card for 1,935 TL (~$42 USD). It is the cheapest tourist SIM card at IST Airport and the best value compared to the other airport SIM card shops.
Is it cheaper to buy a SIM card in Istanbul city center?
Yes, buying a prepaid SIM card in Istanbul city center is usually cheaper than buying one at Istanbul Airport. However, even city center tourist SIM card deals are often more expensive than eSIMs in 2026. If your phone supports eSIM, I recommend ordering an eSIM for Turkey before your trip.
Is an eSIM cheaper than buying a SIM card at Istanbul Airport?
Yes, in most cases an eSIM is much cheaper than buying a prepaid SIM card at Istanbul Airport. For example, the Nomad eSIM for Turkey gives you 20 GB for $21 USD or 50 GB for $31 USD. That is much better value than the cheapest physical SIM card at Istanbul Airport, which costs 1,935 TL (~$42 USD) for 20 GB data.
What is the best eSIM for Turkey in 2026?
Based on my latest Turkey eSIM comparison, Nomad is the best overall eSIM for Turkey in 2026. It offers the best balance of price, data allowance, transparency and usability. If you only need 10 GB, SimOptions is the cheapest reliable option. If you want unlimited-style data, Sim Local is the best option because of its generous Fair Use Policy.

Yes, passport registration is mandatory when buying a prepaid SIM card in Turkey. This is another reason why an eSIM is more convenient, as you can install it before traveling and skip the airport registration process.

Some official operator stores at Istanbul Airport may offer eSIMs for tourists, but availability can be hit or miss. If you specifically want an eSIM for Turkey, it is much easier and usually much cheaper to order one online before your trip. That way you can install the eSIM at home and connect as soon as you land.
Is free WiFi available at Istanbul Airport?
Yes, Istanbul Airport offers free WiFi, but access can be limited and the process is not always convenient. Some travelers need to scan their passport at a WiFi machine to get connected. For this reason, I always prefer arriving with mobile data already installed through an eSIM.
Should I buy a SIM card at Istanbul Airport?
In my opinion, no. Only buy a SIM card at Istanbul Airport if your phone does not support eSIM or if you really need a physical prepaid SIM card immediately after landing. Otherwise, install an eSIM before your trip. It is cheaper, faster and much easier than dealing with airport SIM card shops after a long flight.
Final thoughts on buying a SIM card at Istanbul Airport
Buying a SIM card at Istanbul Airport is easy, but after checking the latest prices again, my conclusion is still very clear: I do not recommend buying a SIM card at Istanbul Airport unless you really need a physical SIM card immediately after landing.
The best physical SIM card deal at IST Airport is currently the Turk Telekom 20 GB data-only SIM card for 1,935 TL (~$42 USD). If your phone does not support eSIM and you want to get connected straight away, then this is the prepaid SIM card I would buy at Istanbul Airport.
But for most tourists traveling to Turkey in 2026, an eSIM is simply the better choice. The Nomad eSIM for Turkey gives you 20 GB for $21 USD and 50 GB for $31 USD, which makes airport SIM cards look very expensive. You can install your eSIM before departure, skip the SIM card shops, avoid passport registration and be online within minutes after landing.
So my honest advice is simple: get an eSIM for Turkey before you fly. Only buy a prepaid SIM card at Istanbul Airport if you specifically need a physical SIM card or if your phone is not eSIM compatible.
