That is why I recommend travelers to install an eSIM for Turkey before flying. It is cheaper, faster, easier and you are connected as soon as the plane lands, without having to deal with overpriced airport SIM card shops, passport registration or waiting in line after a long flight.

Welcome to Istanbul Airport (IST) which has the ambition to become one of the biggest airports in the world. The 'new' Istanbul Airport opened its doors in 2018 and is obviously very modern and super spacious.

IST Airport is incredibly big and distances are long, sometimes very long. It is a busy airport, and its wide open spaces makes it a beautiful and easy going airport, but be prepared to walk.

Most cringe about IST Airport is that they still offer limited free WiFi. In 2026 there is now free WiFi for all passengers arriving/departing on Turkish Airlines flights, all other passengers need to scan their passport at a machine to get 1 hour free WiFi.

There is only one International Arrival Hall. After you went through passport control you get to a huge Baggage Claim Hall. There are ATM's, money changers and Duty Free shops, but no sim card shops in the baggage claim area, they are in the arrival hall.

Should you buy a SIM card at Istanbul Airport?

In my opinion, no, you should not buy a SIM card at Istanbul Airport unless you really need a physical prepaid SIM card immediately after landing and your phone does not support eSIMs.

Yes, buying a SIM card at Istanbul Airport is easy. There are multiple SIM card shops in the arrivals hall, they are open 24 hours and staff will help you activate everything on the spot. But the problem is simple: tourist SIM card prices at Istanbul Airport are very expensive.

Even the cheapest prepaid SIM card at IST Airport, the Turk Telekom 20 GB data-only SIM card for 1,935 TL (~$42 USD), is still not cheap compared to Turkey eSIM deals you can buy online before your trip.

Where to buy a SIM card at Istanbul Airport (IST)?

There are 5 different sim card shops at Istanbul Airport and they sell more or less the same prepaid sim cards for Turkey for tourists. The prices different a little, so keep reading and I tell you where you can find the best tourist sim card at Istanbul Airport.

After you collect your luggage from the luggage belts in the baggage claim area there is only one exit. Through sliding doors you will end up in the massive arrival hall and you are forced to go either left or right.

If you walk to the right you see Burger King on your right hand side and in front of you you will see: Njoy Local SIM and WIFIST. Njoy is a Turk Telekom reseller store and the 'Vodafone'/WIFIST sells of course Vodafone prepaid sim cards but also Turkcell sim cards. Don't be fooled by the signs this is NOT an official Vodafone store.

If you walk to the left you will see the all the phone stores of all the main mobile internet provider in Turkey: Turkcell, Vodafone and Turk Telekom. In these phone stores you can now also get eSIMs as per 2026.

All sim card shops at Istanbul Airport are open for 24 hours. Only the official phone stores from Turkcell, Turk Telekom and Vodafone offer eSIMs, all other stores only have physical prepaid sim cards for tourists available.

• 55 GB data + 750 local minutes + 750 local SMS + free social media + free WhatsApp = 2,900 TL (~$63 USD)
• 105 GB data + 750 local minutes + 750 local SMS + free social media + free WhatsApp = 3,030 TL (~$66 USD)

The 20 GB data-only package for 1,935 TL (~$42 USD) is the best physical SIM card deal at Istanbul Airport right now. It is still expensive compared to eSIMs for Turkey, but if you insist on buying a prepaid SIM card after landing, this is the best option.

Turkcell store Istanbul Airport

Turkcell is known for having the strongest mobile network in Turkey, especially outside the big cities. However, Turkcell SIM cards at Istanbul Airport are still much more expensive than eSIMs.

• 25 GB data = 2,550 TL (~$56 USD)
• 50 GB data = 2,700 TL (~$59 USD)
• 100 GB data = 2,995 TL (~$66 USD)
• 200 GB data = 3,175 TL (~$69 USD)

Turkcell also has prepaid SIM card plans for tourists with data + calls, but they are even more expensive.

If you want the best network coverage and do not mind paying airport prices, Turkcell is a good choice. But for most tourists, these plans are still not good value compared to ordering an eSIM before flying to Turkey.

Vodafone store Istanbul Airport

Vodafone tourist SIM cards at Istanbul Airport are also expensive. All plans include local minutes, local SMS and unlimited social media, but the prices are much higher than online eSIM deals for Turkey.

• 20 GB data + 750 local minutes + 250 local SMS = 3,200 TL (~$70 USD)
• 50 GB data + 750 local minutes + 250 local SMS = 4,100 TL (~$90 USD)
• 80 GB data + 750 local minutes + 250 local SMS = 4,900 TL (~$107 USD)
• 100 GB data + 750 local minutes + 250 local SMS = 5,900 TL (~$129 USD)
• Unlimited data + local calls + local SMS = 9,500 TL (~$208 USD)

The Vodafone tourist SIM card prices at Istanbul Airport are very high. Unless you specifically want Vodafone and need a physical SIM card immediately, I would skip these plans.

Njoy SIM Istanbul Airport

Njoy SIM is a Turk Telekom reseller at Istanbul Airport. Although it sells tourist SIM cards that use the Turk Telekom network, the prices are different from the official Turk Telekom store.

• 10 GB data + 250 local minutes + 250 local SMS = 2,700 TL (~$59 USD)
• 25 GB data + 750 local minutes + 750 local SMS = 2,950 TL (~$65 USD)
• 50 GB data + 1,500 local minutes + 1,500 local SMS = 3,300 TL (~$72 USD)
• 75 GB data + 2,250 local minutes + 2,250 local SMS = 3,500 TL (~$77 USD)

The Njoy SIM prices are not attractive compared to the official Turk Telekom store. The official Turk Telekom store sells a 20 GB data-only SIM card for 1,935 TL (~$42 USD), while Njoy starts at 2,700 TL (~$59 USD) for only 10 GB.

WIFIST / Vodafone reseller Istanbul Airport

WIFIST is a Vodafone reseller at Istanbul Airport. Do not confuse this with the official Vodafone store. The plans are different and the pricing is also different.

• 20 GB data + 750 local minutes + 250 local SMS + unlimited social media = 2,950 TL (~$65 USD)
• 50 GB data + 750 local minutes + 250 local SMS + unlimited social media = 3,300 TL (~$72 USD)
• 80 GB data + 750 local minutes + 250 local SMS + unlimited social media = 3,600 TL (~$79 USD)
• 100 GB data + 750 local minutes + 250 local SMS + unlimited social media = 4,000 TL (~$87 USD)

WIFIST is cheaper than the official Vodafone store for similar data packages, but still more expensive than the official Turk Telekom 20 GB data-only SIM card and much more expensive than most Turkey eSIMs.

My conclusion: if you really want to buy a physical prepaid SIM card at Istanbul Airport, go to the official Turk Telekom store and buy the 20 GB data-only package for 1,935 TL (~$42 USD). But for most tourists, an eSIM for Turkey is still the cheaper and easier option.

On your left-hand side when you walk into the Arrival Hall you will also find a store Airport Wifi Rental shop. Here they rent out Pocket Wifis and for $16 USD per day you get unlimited data. You can connect up to 10 devices at the same time. Sounds cool, but keep in mind that you all share the same connection, so data speed will drop drastically the more devices you connect. You will have to pay a $50 USD deposit for the pocket WiFi.

How to get from Istanbul Airport to Istanbul city center

You can take a regular taxi to the city which will cost around 1,700 TL ($38 USD) and takes between 40-60 minutes depending on traffic and where you go in the city.

I recommend you to download Bitaxi, the leading Taxi App in Turkey, but Uber also works. A ride to Taksim, Galata, Besiktas, etc. it will cost the same but there is less chance to get ripped off. Because unfortunately taxis in Istanbul are the worst ever and they love scamming tourists.

There are of course also busses and damn they are convenient. Go to the -2 floor and get one of the HavaIST busses. They have several stops in the popular tourist districts of Istanbul and you only pay 310 TL ($7 USD) for a ticket. You can buy a ticket in the bus with your credit card.
