Unfortunately Saily does not specify which network operator they use in Philippines and it is neither really clear if their Philippines plans are 5G ready. They just mention on their website: depending on local network provider.

Although prices are good, this is essential info that is missing, which is definitely a disadvantage of Saily.

All the Airalo eSIMs are data-only sim cards without a phone number, so any phone/sms service is NOT supported. An Airalo eSIM has to be installed within 1 month and after activation the credit validity starts when it connects the first time to a supported network. For more info check out the Airalo website.

Holafly

Holafly is another well-known eSIM provider but unlike other eSIM providers they only offer eSIMs with unlimited data. However, there is a catch and that is a so-called FUP (Fair Use Policy). More about it later, but it could mean that you suddenly have a very slow data connection for a whole day until the data speed restores.

The Holafly eSIMs are significantly more expensive than Jetpac, Airalo, Nomad and SimOptions. The Holafly eSIMs for the Philippines are data-only and incoming and outgoing calls/sms are NOT supported. These eSIMs do also not come with a phone number.

According to the Holafly website these Holafly Philippines eSIMs operate on the 4G/LTE/5G network of Smart and Globe so the Holafly eSIMs are supposedly 5G ready.

You can use a hotspot on the Holafly eSIMs, but it is capped at 500 MB per day.

Why 'unlimited'? Because there is a Fair Use Policy and the only thing Holfaly states on their website about data speed reduction is the following: "if necessary. Some carriers may reserve the right to apply a Fair Usage Policy"

There is no info whatsoever what the FUP is and what the reduced data speed means.

If I hate something then it is slow data speed. Therefore Traveltomtom is not a fan of eSIMs with 'unlimited' data with an undefined FUP and therefore it is not my first recommendation when looking for an eSIM for the Philippines.

Also, the Traveltomtom Team tested Holafly in several countries and was disappointed with the overall performance. Holafly was not using the strongest mobile data network operator in those countries and while people all around had a proper data connection our Holafly eSIM had no signal. Even when we were in big cities I constantly had to ask for the public WiFi of my hotels, restaurants and bars because my Holafly eSIM was super slow.

I understand it could be a different story in the Philippines but I was put off a bit by Holafly eSIMs.

Smart

Smart is a mobile internet operator in the Philippines that offers their prepaid sim card plans also as eSIMs. Big difference between Holafly, Nomad, Jetpac, Airalo and SimOptions is that you can only buy Smart eSIMs in person in one of their stores or at Manila Airport.

So only once you have set foot in the Philippines and not on the internet!

At the Smart shop they have 8 different prepaid sim card plans for tourists:

• unlimited data + 156 minutes = 2,500 PHP - $43 USD
• unlimited data + 218 minutes = 3,000 PHP - $51 USD

The Smart prepaid sim cards are 5G ready and the big advantage over the other eSIMs is that these local eSIMs come with unlimited calling and texting in the Philippines.

Globe

As of 2026 Globe now also offers eSIMs for tourists in their phone stores in the Philippines and at international airports.

Truly the cheapest eSIM for Philippines is Jetpac as they offer an eSIM for just $1 USD. It is only valid for 4 days and it gives you 1 GB data.

Other cheap eSIMs for the Philippines are an eSIM from Sim Local for $3.75 USD or Nomad for $4 USD. You 1 GB data for 7 days. All of these cheap eSIMs are only valid in the Philippines and do not support calling and texting.

So what about overseas data roaming plans? Well, not recommended! Why? Did you read the small letters at what data speed you can use data roaming? Pretty much all mobile internet operators limit the data speed for overseas data roaming plans, which means you end up with 3G data speed. Do you have the patience to handle 3G? It is frustrating when all around you in pretty much every amazing tourist destinations in Philippines there is 4G/LTE available.

And price-wise it should be a no brainer since you have seen how affordable the eSIMs for the Philippines are.

Uncountable times travel friends have asked me: 'Tom, can I use your hotspot? My data roaming plan is so slow, it is barely working!' Trust me, get yourself an eSIM or an international prepaid sim card for traveling to the Philippines.

Spend a couple dollars extra and be connected all the time instead of begging for WiFi or a hotspot from friends.

On arrival in the Philippines

There are 3 main mobile internet provider in the Philippines: Globe, Smart and Dito. As per 2026 Smart and Globe now also offer eSIMs for tourists.

You will find several sim card shops from Globe and Smart in the arrival hall where they sell tourist sim cards. As mentioned before Globe only sells a physical prepaid sim card, but Smart also sells tourist eSIMs.

When to order/activate an eSIM for the Philippines?

You can order an eSIM for the Philippines pretty much any time you want. Most eSIMs have to be installed on a phone within 1 month after purchasing, some even within 1 year, so you have time.

More important therefore is when do you instal/activate the eSIM. The validity of some eSIMs start straight after the installation, other eSIMs only start their validity when they connect the first time to a supported network.

Traveltomtom advices to instal your eSIM on the day of departure to the Philippines or before. You will need a stable internet connection to instal your eSIM. Manila international airport has free WiFi which works good so you could use that to install your eSIM.

Just make sure it is a stable internet connection. But just to make sure Traveltomtom advices you to install/activate your eSIM in your home country.

My personal advice is to instal your tourist eSIM for the Philippines before you get into the plane, because then as soon as the plane lands you will be connected to the internet without any problems.

You will see a summary of your eSIM order including a QR code on your screen and at the same time you will also receive an email with the same QR code. The email contains instructions on how to instal and activate your Philippines eSIM.

Make sure your phone is unlocked

To make sure you didn't miss this, let me say this again: eSIMs only work in UNLOCKED phones. If your phone is unlocked then you can use any eSIM without any problems.

If your phone is locked then ask your mobile internet provider from your home country to unlock your phone before your trip to the Philippines. It is likely that your mobile internet provider will charge you a fee for unlocking your smartphone.

If you are unable to unlock your phone you can look into getting a portable WiFi for staying connected when traveling to the Philippines or better… bring a second unlocked phone on your trip to Philippines and use it as a portable WiFi device.

Which smartphones support eSIMs?

Another very important thing you have to check before buying an eSIM is if your smartphone supports eSIMs. If you have any of the latest smartphones then there is no need to worry, all new smartphones of the well known brands support eSIMs.

The fastest way to find out if your phone is eSIM compatible is by asking Google the question: is my (your phone model) eSIM compatible? Simple as that!

If your phone is NOT eSIM compatible then there is no other solution and you can NOT use an eSIM for traveling to the Philippines.

After I contacted support they explained me that I had to wait for 24 hours until my data speed was restored to normal.

Those 24 hours were a nightmare as my data speed was barely enough to use WhatsApp. Social media was not even loading!

Especially on days that you have a long bus or train ride and you need a lot of data, you definitely don't want any data speed restrictions that day.

Local prepaid sim cards

In general if you use a lot of data then local prepaid sim cards are a cheaper way to stay connected, depending on the length of your trip.

Philippines prepaid sim cards for tourists offer bigger data plans than tourist eSIMs you order online. In fact local prepaid sim cards with data are pretty cheap for tourists in Philippines.

However, a local prepaid sim card can only be purchased on arrival in Philippines in a phone store or at the airport but NOT on the internet.

Another big difference is that local prepaid sim cards have the advantage that they come with a local phone number and mostly with calling minutes and sms bundles. That means incoming and outgoing calls are supported.

International prepaid sim cards

If your smartphone is not eSIM compatible you can order an international prepaid sim card for traveling to the Philippines. Some of them are great for the Philippines as well as in all other countries in for example Europe, Americas and Asia and you can easily order them online.

For my own trips to Singapore I personally use the SimOptions eSIM for Singapore. The main reason is simple: most of my Singapore trips are short. I have been to Singapore uncountable times over the years, but in general my trips to Singapore are about 3-5 days.

Singapore has often been a quick and easy stop for me. I have used Singapore for visa runs from Bali, as a convenient travel hub in Asia between Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia.

You get unlimited data for 7 days, which is exactly the kind of eSIM I want for a short Singapore trip. Another big reason why I recommend SimOptions is that tourist SIM cards at Changi Airport (SIN) are expensive.
