Yes, if you are traveling to Uganda I highly recommend getting a prepaid SIM card or an eSIM to avoid high roaming charges. Having mobile data in Uganda makes traveling a lot easier, especially because this is not a destination where everything is perfectly organized or easy to navigate.

Whether you are planning your route using my Uganda itinerary, arranging transport, booking tours or simply staying in touch with your accommodation, a working data connection is essential.

In cities like Kampala and Entebbe you will find WiFi in hotels, cafes and restaurants, but it is often slow or unreliable. Once you leave the city and start exploring national parks or go gorilla trekking in Bwindi, WiFi is rarely available and mobile data becomes your only way to stay connected.

Even for simple things like checking directions, confirming bookings or contacting your driver, having your own SIM card in Uganda will save you time, stress and sometimes even money.

Where to buy a prepaid SIM card in Uganda

There are several places where you can buy a prepaid SIM card in Uganda, but not all options are equally convenient for tourists. Based on my experience, it is actually pretty straightforward as long as you know where to go.

Buying a SIM card at Entebbe Airport

The easiest place to buy a SIM card in Uganda is right after you land at Entebbe International Airport. There are official kiosks from both Airtel and MTN inside and just outside the arrivals hall.

Buying your SIM card at the airport is convenient and saves you the hassle of finding a shop later. Prices are similar to the city and your SIM card will be activated on the spot. Expect the whole process to take around 10 to 20 minutes depending on how busy it is.

Buying a SIM card in Uganda city centers

If you decide to buy your SIM card in Kampala or another city, things can be a bit more complicated than you might expect. Yes, you will see Airtel and MTN shops everywhere along the main roads, but most of these are resellers that only sell top ups.

In Uganda, SIM card registration is strictly regulated. Your SIM card has to be registered with your passport and often includes a fingerprint scan. Because of this, only a limited number of official service centers are allowed to register a SIM card on a foreign passport.

That means you often have to ask around to find the right shop that can actually register your SIM card.

From my own experience, this can be a bit frustrating. I once went into an Airtel shop, went through the whole registration process, handed over my passport, did the paperwork and waited around 20 minutes… only to be told at the end that the system was down and I had to come back the next day.

That is exactly why I recommend buying your SIM card at the airport or get an eSIM for convenience. It is simply easier and saves you the hassle.

Buying an eSIM for Uganda online

If you want to be connected as soon as you land and avoid the registration process, you can also arrange an eSIM for Uganda online before your trip.

SIM card registration in Uganda

Buying a prepaid SIM card in Uganda is not just a quick purchase, there is a full registration process involved. Every SIM card has to be registered on your name using your passport.

From my own experience, this process can take some time. I remember my friend Sean going through the registration when buying an Airtel SIM card after we crossed into Uganda overland late at night. It is quite a formal process and not something you can rush.

• A copy of your passport is taken
• Your fingerprint is scanned
• A photo is taken of you holding the SIM card
• You fill out a registration form
• Your SIM card is activated on the spot

On average the registration process takes around 20 to 40 minutes, depending on how busy the shop is.

During registration you will also create a personal PIN code. This PIN is required for things like topping up your balance or activating data bundles, so make sure you remember it.

If you want to skip this process altogether, you can consider ordering an eSIM in advance. It is much faster and does not require ID verification, but it is significantly more expensive than a local SIM card.

Uganda has a limited number of mobile network operators. The market is dominated by MTN Uganda and Airtel Uganda, which both offer nationwide coverage and are the main options for tourists.

From my own experience traveling around Uganda multiple times, Airtel performed very well not only in cities but also in more remote areas such as Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. In several places I found the connection to be more stable compared to other networks.

MTN Uganda

• Largest mobile operator in Uganda (by subscribers)
• Extensive nationwide 4G/LTE coverage
• Strong and consistent performance in cities
• Widely available across the country

MTN has a strong reputation in Uganda and offers reliable mobile internet in most parts of the country. In cities like Kampala and Entebbe, connections are fast and stable, and along main travel routes coverage is generally very good.

Lycamobile Uganda

• Smaller operator focused on low-cost data plans
• Cheaper bundles compared to MTN and Airtel
• Limited network coverage outside cities
• Less reliable in rural areas and national parks

Lycamobile can be an option for basic usage in cities, but for traveling around Uganda and visiting remote areas it is not the most reliable choice.

UTel (Uganda Telecom)

• Very small local operator
• Limited network coverage and availability
• Difficult to find SIM cards
• Not commonly used by tourists

While UTel still exists, its network and availability are limited compared to MTN and Airtel, making it less practical for travelers.

Mobile internet in Uganda: 4G and 5G coverage

Mobile internet in Uganda is generally reliable, especially in cities and along the main travel routes. Both MTN and Airtel offer 4G/LTE coverage across most parts of the country, including popular tourist destinations.

When traveling between Entebbe and Kampala or heading southwest towards places like Lake Mburo or Bwindi, you will generally have a signal for most of the journey. However, speeds and stability can vary depending on your exact location.

MTN vs Airtel network performance

• Both networks offer similar nationwide 4G coverage on paper
• MTN is the largest operator in terms of subscribers
• Airtel is widely used and has strong presence across the country
• Performance can vary depending on region and tower availability

From my own experience traveling around Uganda multiple times, I noticed differences in performance between the two networks depending on the location. In cities the difference is minimal, but in more remote areas the experience can vary.

In places like Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, I found Airtel to have a more stable connection compared to MTN. This was also mentioned by local guides and drivers during my trip.

Is there 5G in Uganda?

Prepaid SIM cards in Uganda are very affordable compared to most other travel destinations. Both Airtel and MTN offer a wide range of data bundles, but prices and structure are slightly different.

Airtel Uganda data bundles

• 3 GB for 30 days - 10,000 UGX (~$2.70 USD)
• 12 GB for 30 days - 30,000 UGX (~$8 USD)
• 22 GB for 30 days - 50,000 UGX (~$13.50 USD)

Airtel offers flexible data bundles with very competitive pricing. Monthly plans in particular offer excellent value for money, especially for travelers staying longer than a week.

MTN Uganda data bundles

• 10 GB tourist bundle - 30,000 UGX (~$8 USD)
• 30 GB for 30 days - 85,000 UGX (~$23 USD)
• 50 GB for 30 days - 140,000 UGX (~$38 USD)

MTN offers specific tourist bundles as well as regular data plans. Prices are slightly higher compared to Airtel in terms of cost per GB, but still very affordable overall.

Keep in mind that prices in Uganda can change frequently and promotions are common, so you may find slightly different offers when buying your SIM card.

What is the best prepaid SIM card for tourists in Uganda

If you are traveling to Uganda, the choice is simple: Airtel Uganda or MTN Uganda. These two networks dominate the market and both offer reliable 4G coverage across the country.

In cities like Kampala and Entebbe, there is little difference between the two. Along main travel routes both networks perform well and you will generally have a stable connection.

From my own experience traveling around Uganda, I found Airtel to perform slightly better in remote areas. Especially in places like Bwindi Impenetrable Forest for gorilla trekking, Airtel gave me a more stable connection compared to MTN.

Conclusion: Airtel stands out for its value for money and strong real-world performance, especially if you are heading into more remote parts of Uganda.

MTN is the largest operator in the country and a very reliable alternative with strong nationwide coverage.

If you want the safest all-round option, both networks will work. If your trip includes gorilla trekking or more remote travel, Airtel may have a slight edge.

Using an eSIM for visiting Uganda in 2026

If your phone is eSIM compatible, using an eSIM for Uganda is the easiest way to get online instantly. No need to visit a shop, no registration process and you are connected as soon as you land.

eSIMs are significantly more expensive than local SIM cards in Uganda. For longer trips, a local Airtel or MTN SIM card is usually much better value.

eSIMs vs local prepaid SIM cards in Uganda

If you are not sure whether to use an eSIM or buy a local prepaid SIM card in Uganda, here is the simple breakdown.

• Local SIM cards are much cheaper: around 10 GB for ~$8 USD vs ~$35 USD on eSIM
• Local SIM cards offer better value for longer trips
• eSIMs are instant and convenient, no registration needed
• Both options use the same mobile networks (Airtel or MTN)

Conclusion: if you are staying in Uganda for more than a few days, buying a local SIM card is by far the better option.

My experience buying a sim card in Uganda

As you have seen I also wrote a blog about buying a sim card at Entebbe Airport however, that is NOT where I bought my sim card for Uganda. The first time I traveled to Uganda I entered Uganda overland from Tanzania.

At the Uganda - Tanzania border of Mutukula there is no kiosk that sells sim cards for tourists. Therefore I had to wait until I got off the bus in Masaka. It was already late, but just before curfew (covid days) I managed to locate an Airtel shop.

After all the official procedures, which took about 20 minutes, the friendly guy told me: sorry, can't activate now, the system is down! Damn! Which meant my sim card was useless and I had to come back the day after.

The next day I woke up early to continue my trip to Mbarara, one of the bigger cities in Uganda. Here I tried again to buy a sim card and this time I went to an official MTN store. I needed to do the whole registration process again and then same problem… system down.

Luckily I was able to have lunch around the corner and an hour later the problem was fixed.

It took a lot of effort but finally I got my Uganda prepaid sim card and I was online. Throughout my Uganda trip I didn't have any issues with my MTN sim card.

However, when traveling in Southern Uganda: Lake Mburo, Lake Bunyonyi and gorilla trekking in Bwindi National Park I found out that my friends who had an Airtel sim card had much better phone signal and faster data speed than me.

Therefore I recommend people traveling to Uganda and trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest to buy an Airtel sim card.

On my last trip to Uganda I got myself a 1 GB data eSIM from Airalo just to get through the first day and be online as soon as the plane lands. The next day I was intended to go to a sim card store, only to arrive at an Airtel shop and saw the massive line of people.

I decided to not put myself through the hassle of buying a prepaid sim card in Uganda this time. Instead I went online and topped up my Airalo eSIM. A little more expensive, but so much easier.
