Yes, you can buy a prepaid SIM card for tourists at New York JFK Airport, but the options are very limited and I do not recommend it for most travelers. There are no official mobile phone stores or staffed SIM card shops in the arrivals hall. The only option is buying a prepaid SIM card from one of the SIM card vending machines inside the airport.

Although New York is probably the most famous city in the world, the arrival halls at JFK Airport are not exactly impressive. Do not expect a modern arrivals area full of facilities, phone stores, car rental desks and convenient travel services. The arrival halls are pretty small and regardless of which international terminal you arrive at, facilities are limited.

The good news is that JFK Airport has free public WiFi for arriving and departing passengers and in my experience it works very well. You can use the airport WiFi to send a message, order an Uber or even buy and install an eSIM for the USA after landing if you did not arrange one before your flight.

That said, I still recommend arriving prepared. Having a working data connection on your phone makes traveling to New York so much easier and safer. Think about checking Google Maps, ordering an Uber, comparing taxi prices, finding your hotel, using WhatsApp, checking banking apps or looking up train connections into Manhattan.

A lot of people say you do not need a SIM card or eSIM in the USA because there is WiFi everywhere. In reality, I would never rely only on public WiFi when traveling. It is not always available, it can be slow and public WiFi networks are often unsecured. Using a VPN is recommended if you connect to public WiFi.

So yes, you can buy a SIM card at JFK Airport, but the real question is whether you should. With SIM cards only available from vending machines and the cheapest option costing $29 USD for just 1 GB data, an eSIM or a prepaid SIM card bought later in New York City is a much better choice.

Where to buy a tourist sim card at New York JFK Airport

Just like many other international airports in the USA buying a prepaid sim card is a pain. I have also researched buying a SIM card on arrival in San Fransico, Newark, Miami, Los Angeles, etc. and everywhere I came to the same conclusion. Either not possible at all or not recommended.

There used to be two small kiosks at JFK Airport in the arrival hall but they have been abandoned now for quite a while. This narrows the options down to SIM card vending machines. There are 4 SIM card vending machines at New York JFK Airport and they are easy to find when you walk into the arrival hall.

Buying a SIM card from a vending machine means you will have to do everything yourself. The activation and the registration. There is NO service included or anyone around helping you setting up the SIM card. The SIM cards work based on plug and play.

The SIM card vending machines accept international credit cards as well as USD notes.

JFK Airport SIM card prices in 2026

The SIM card vending machines contain 4 different prepaid data SIM cards for tourists. These SIM cards are NOT from one of the main internet providers in the USA: Verizon, T-Mobile or AT&T, but are international roaming SIM cards.

Travel SIM

The Travel SIM cards are $20 USD and comes with $10 USD credit, no data or calling/texting is included. You can use the credit to buy a data bundle on the Travel Sim website.

The cheapest data bundle costs $19 USD which you will be able to add to your account after signing up on the Travel SIM website. You will have to follow the instructions displayed after buying the package from the vending machine.

Unlimited Data* Talk & Text

Don't be fooled by the name ‘Unlimited Data'... Unlimited data in this case means data speed on E-network (2G) after you used your bundle allowance.

They offer 3 different SIM cards that all include unlimited calling & texting within the USA:

• 4 GB data = $60 USD
• 6 GB data = $80 USD
• Unlimited data on 4G speed = $100 USD

All the above packages are valid for 30 days and rechargeable after.

Best prepaid SIM card at New York JFK Airport in 2026

The best tourist SIM card deal at JFK is a tourist SIM card for $29 USD and you get 1 GB data. You can buy this SIM card through a vending machine only.

You have to activate this Travel SIM package yourself and register the SIM card on their website.

Why I do not recommend buying a SIM card at JFK Airport

After researching SIM card options at more than 150 airports around the world, JFK Airport in New York is honestly one of the worst places to buy a tourist SIM card. There are no official mobile phone stores and no staffed SIM card shops in the arrivals hall. The only option is buying a prepaid SIM card from a vending machine.

That means there is no one to explain the plans, no one to help with activation and no one to fix the problem if the SIM card does not work immediately. On top of that, prices are terrible. The cheapest SIM card at JFK Airport costs $29 USD for just 1 GB data.

Also be careful with the so-called unlimited data offers. Unlimited data does not always mean unlimited high-speed data. Some plans only include a limited amount of high-speed data and then reduce your speed to a very slow connection.

My experiences buying a sim card at New York JFK Airport

As you can understand I did NOT buy a sim card from one of the vending machines at New York JFK Airport. I am still really surprised how the world's most famous country does NOT cater for USA tourist sim cards on arrival at their international airports.

If you prefer to buy a physical sim card then go to a Verizon, T-Mobile or AT&T store in New York City center and get your USA sim card there. You will get much more value for money, but prices are much higher than ordering an eSIM for the USA online.

How to get from JFK Airport to New York City Center

Taking an Uber is a good and safe option but a little more expensive than the yellow taxis with flat fares. For an Uber to Manhattan I was quoted ~$80 USD, the yellow taxi flat fare was only $52 USD. Be aware that taxi drivers in New York demand a 'mandatory' tip. It is up to you how you deal with that! 

The yellow cabs accept credit card payments. Uber cars are more expensive but a little more convenient and after fighting with my taxi driver about the mandatory tip I might next time take an Uber from JFK Airport to New York City Center.
