In this 2026 guide I show you where to buy a prepaid Spain SIM card at Madrid Airport, what it costs and whether it is actually worth it.

On my latest arrival in Madrid after a trip to Venezuela I forgot to arrange an eSIM beforehand and started looking for a tourist SIM card at the airport. After walking around the terminals it quickly became clear that most airport SIM cards are sold at tourist prices and in many cases installing an eSIM for Spain is actually cheaper and much easier.

Another thing to know: Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport (MAD) is very spread out. The terminals are several kilometers apart and depending on where you arrive your SIM card options can be completely different.

But the moment you arrive at Madrid Airport (MAD) you will probably want internet on your phone for the basics: Google Maps, ordering an Uber, checking public transport routes or messaging friends.

Madrid is one of the busiest travel hubs between Europe and Latin America and many travelers arrive here before continuing their journey through Spain or Europe. Having mobile data right after landing makes getting around the city much easier.

Public WiFi networks are widely available in hotels, cafes and restaurants, but they are often slow, unreliable or unsecured. Having your own mobile data connection simply makes traveling around Madrid much smoother.

If you want the cheapest option you can buy a local prepaid SIM card in Spain. However, if convenience is your priority then installing an eSIM for Spain before your trip is often the easiest solution.

Arriving at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD)

Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport (MAD) has four terminals: T1, T2, T3 and T4. One thing every traveler quickly notices is that the Madrid airport is very spread out. The terminals are located several kilometers apart and moving between them requires a shuttle bus.

Most long-haul and intercontinental flights arrive at Terminal 1 or Terminal 4. Terminal 2 and 3 are older and mainly serve short-haul European routes. Because the terminals are so far apart, changing terminals just to buy a SIM card is usually not worth the effort.

That matters because the SIM card options at Madrid Airport depend heavily on which terminal you arrive at.

In general, Terminal 4 has the better SIM card deals, while Terminal 1 is much more expensive. In fact, some SIM cards at Terminal 1 can cost more than double compared to the options available in Terminal 4.

My advice: trying to move between terminals at Madrid Airport just to find a cheaper SIM card can easily cost you more time than it is worth.

Where to buy a SIM card at Madrid Airport (MAD)

You can buy a prepaid SIM card at Madrid Airport (MAD), but the available options depend heavily on which terminal you arrive at. Madrid Airport is very spread out and the terminals are several kilometers apart, so switching terminals just to buy a SIM card is usually not practical.

In general, Terminal 4 has the best SIM card options, while Terminal 1 has fewer and more expensive choices. Below you can see exactly what to expect when arriving at each terminal.

Terminal 1

If you arrive at Terminal 1, there are currently two places where you can buy a SIM card.

The main option is Betel Phone, a phone shop located in the arrivals area between the arrival exits. They sell Orange prepaid SIM cards for tourists, but prices here are significantly higher than normal Spanish SIM card prices.

There is also a Sim Local kiosk in the Terminal 1 arrival hall selling international travel SIM cards. While Traveltomtom is a big fan of Sim Local’s online eSIM store, the tourist SIM cards sold at airport kiosks are usually priced for convenience and therefore more expensive.

Terminal 4

Terminal 4 offers more options for buying a SIM card when arriving at Madrid Airport.

The easiest place to find is the Sim Local store in the arrival hall. This shop sells several international travel SIM cards and Spain SIM cards. However, just like in Terminal 1, these airport SIM cards are usually sold at tourist prices.

If you continue walking into the arrival hall you will find two additional stores selling Orange prepaid SIM cards:

• The Market convenience store – sells Orange prepaid SIM cards with large data bundles.
• Consigna (Left Luggage) – located further down the terminal and often offers the cheapest SIM card deal at Madrid Airport.

The Consigna store can be a little hidden at the far end of the terminal, but it usually has the best value SIM card option at Madrid Airport.

Tip: Many airport shops close relatively early in the evening, so if you arrive late there may not be any SIM card stores open.

SIM card prices at Madrid Airport 2026

SIM card prices at Madrid Airport (MAD) vary a lot depending on the terminal and the store. Based on recent research at the airport, these are the typical tourist SIM card deals you can expect to find in the arrivals areas.

Keep in mind that airport shops sometimes run small promotions, so prices or included data bundles can occasionally be slightly different on the day you arrive.

 

Betel Phone - Terminal 1

At Betel Phone in Terminal 1 they only sell Orange prepaid SIM cards. Be aware these are expensive. The Betel Phone opening hours are 08:00 to 19:00, so if you arrive later there may be no place left to buy a SIM card in Terminal 1.

• Cheapest Orange tourist SIM card: €45 EUR (~$52 USD) - valid for 1 month and includes EU roaming

Terminal 1 is by far the worst value for buying a SIM card at Madrid Airport.

Sim Local - Terminal 1 & Terminal 4

Sim Local now has stores in both Terminal 1 and Terminal 4. They sell tourist SIM cards from Lyca Mobile, Lebara, MásMóvil and Cubemóvil. All plans shown are valid for 28 days.

The Sim Local shops at Madrid Airport are open from 06:00 AM till 10:00 PM.

Lyca Mobile

• 150 GB data + unlimited calls + international minutes = €40 EUR (~$46 USD)

MásMóvil

• 60 GB data + unlimited calls + international minutes = €30 EUR (~$35 USD)
• 240 GB data + unlimited calls + international minutes = €35 EUR (~$40 USD)
• 240 GB data + unlimited calls + international minutes = €40 EUR (~$46 USD)

Cubemóvil

• 50 GB data + unlimited calls + international minutes = €30 EUR (~$35 USD)
• 120 GB data + unlimited calls + international minutes = €35 EUR (~$40 USD)
• 170 GB data + unlimited calls + international minutes = €40 EUR (~$46 USD)

Most of the tourist SIM cards sold at Sim Local include limited EU roaming. The amount of GB's available for EU data roaming differs per provider and per plan. Always ask for the EU data roaming if you are traveling onwards beyond Spain.

Traveltomtom is a fan of the Sim Local online eSIM shop, but the physical SIM cards sold at the airport are clearly priced for convenience.

The Market - Terminal 4

The Market store in Terminal 4 sells Orange prepaid SIM cards. The shop is open from 08:00 AM till 8:00 PM.

• 100 GB data + 15 GB EU roaming = €25 EUR (~$29 USD)

This is one of the better value SIM card deals at Madrid Airport.

Consigna - Left Luggage Terminal 4

The Consigna - Left Luggage store in Terminal 4 is a little hidden further down the arrival hall, but it has the best opening hours of the airport SIM card shops: 05:00 AM till 11:00 PM. They sell an Orange prepaid SIM cards.

• 20 GB data valid across Europe for 1 month = €20 EUR (~$23 USD)

This is usually the cheapest SIM card deal at Madrid Airport.

Best mobile network in Spain

Spain has excellent mobile internet coverage and in major cities like Madrid, Barcelona and along the Mediterranean coast the difference between operators is usually small. The main mobile networks in Spain are Movistar, Orange, Vodafone and Yoigo (MásMóvil Group).

Based on nationwide coverage maps and my own travel experience across Spain, Movistar has the strongest overall 4G and 5G coverage in the country, especially outside major cities and in rural regions. This makes Movistar the most reliable network for road trips and traveling around Spain.

However, Movistar SIM cards are not sold at Madrid Airport. At the airport you will mainly find tourist SIM cards from Orange or international SIM resellers.

If you want to buy a SIM card at Madrid Airport (MAD), the best option depends on what you are looking for: the lowest price, the biggest data bundle or simply the most choice.

Based on the current SIM card deals available in the arrival halls, these are the best options:

• Cheapest SIM card: Orange prepaid SIM card from the Consigna (Left Luggage) store in Terminal 4 with 20 GB data for €20 EUR (~$23 USD).

Buying a SIM card in the city vs at the airport

You can buy a Spain SIM card either directly at Madrid Airport (MAD) after landing or later in the city center. Both options work, but there is a clear difference between convenience and price.

Buying a SIM card at the airport is obviously the easiest option. Within minutes after landing you can be connected and start using Google Maps, booking an Uber or checking public transport routes.

However, SIM cards at Madrid Airport are generally sold at tourist prices. Especially in Terminal 1, prices can be significantly higher than what you will find in regular mobile phone shops in the city.

If you wait until you reach Madrid city center you will usually find much better deals. Spanish prepaid SIM cards are very affordable and local operator stores like Movistar, Orange, Vodafone and Yoigo often sell plans with large data bundles for very competitive prices.

Using an eSIM for visiting Madrid

Another easy way to stay connected when visiting Madrid is by using an eSIM. Instead of buying a physical SIM card at Madrid Airport (MAD), you install a digital SIM on your phone before your trip.

The setup is simple. After purchasing an eSIM online you receive a QR code. Scan it, follow the installation steps and within a couple of minutes your Spain data plan is active. When your plane lands in Madrid your phone automatically connects to a local network and you are online immediately.
