Especially when arriving in a new city after a flight, I want to be able to check directions, compare transport options and get online immediately without depending on airport WiFi.

I pass through Lisbon Airport regularly and often use Lisbon as a stopover city. Arriving here is usually easy and stress-free, but having mobile data on your phone makes everything smoother, from ordering a ride into the city to navigating your first hours in town.

You can of course rely on WiFi in hotels, cafes and restaurants in Lisbon, but that is rarely enough for a full trip. That is why I recommend either buying a prepaid SIM card for Portugal or arranging an Portugal eSIM before your trip.

Arriving at Lisbon Airport (LIS)

Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) is one of those airports I pass through regularly as a full time traveler, often on connecting flights between Europe, West Africa, Brazil and the US. It is a relatively small and efficient airport, which makes arriving here pretty straightforward.

All international flights arrive at Terminal 1. After landing, be prepared for a bit of a walk from the gate to passport control, especially if your plane parks further away. Once through immigration, you enter a large and easy-to-navigate arrival hall.

Compared to many other European airports, Lisbon feels relaxed and manageable. It is not overly busy, signage is clear and staff generally speak good English. ATMs, currency exchange counters, SIM card shops and transport options are all in the arrival hall.

Getting into the city is also very easy. Uber and Bolt are widely available and usually the fastest and most affordable way to reach the city center.

Where to buy a SIM card at Lisbon Airport

You can buy a prepaid SIM card for Portugal at Lisbon Airport in a couple of different locations inside the arrivals area. The options are limited, but easy to find once you know where to look.

SIM card shops at the luggage belts

The first opportunity to buy a SIM card is already at the luggage claim area. There is a Vodafone store next to luggage belt no. 9, making it the most immediate option after landing.

This Vodafone store is open from 07.00 am to 10.00 pm.

This is the most convenient place to get connected quickly, as staff can help you set up your SIM card on the spot.

There are also vending machines available in case the store is closed.

However, convenience comes at a price. Vodafone SIM cards at the airport are the most expensive option and offer less value compared to other options in Portugal.

Near luggage belt no. 8 there is a Currency Exchange shop. This place has Lycamobile signs and there are ATM's. Here they sell Lycamobile SIM cards for tourists.

SIM card shops in the arrival hall

After passing through customs, you enter the main arrival hall, where you will find a couple more options.

There is another Vodafone store on the right-hand side, offering the same prepaid SIM card plans as at the luggage belts.

There is also a currency exchange counter that sells tourist SIM cards from Lycamobile.

Availability and waiting time

Buying a SIM card at Lisbon Airport is generally straightforward, but there are a couple of things to keep in mind.

• Limited choice: only a few SIM card shops are available at the airport.
• Waiting time: queues can form at Vodafone stores, especially during peak arrival times.
• Opening hours: SIM card shops are closed after 10.00 pm.

If you want the easiest experience, the Vodafone stores are the most accessible. If you are looking for better value, the currency exchange counters are worth checking.

That said, before you decide to buy a SIM card at the airport, it is worth comparing it with other options like buying a SIM card in the city or using an eSIM for Portugal, which we will cover below.

SIM card prices at Lisbon Airport

Prepaid SIM card prices at Lisbon Airport are fairly straightforward, but your options are limited and not necessarily the best value compared to buying a SIM card in the city.

Vodafone SIM card prices

• Unlimited data (limited EU roaming) for 30 days = €30 EUR (~$34 USD)

Vodafone is the easiest place to buy a SIM card at Lisbon Airport and offers good service, including help with installation. However, it is also the most expensive option with relatively low data allowances compared to the other SIM card option at Lisbon Airport.

Lycamobile SIM card prices

• 25 GB data (limited EU roaming) + calls and SMS for 30 days = €10 EUR (~$11 USD)

Lycamobile SIM cards are sold at currency exchange counters in the arrival hall and are clearly the best value option at Lisbon Airport. They offer significantly more data for a much lower price compared to Vodafone.

The downside is that these SIM cards are only available as physical SIM cards and availability depends on opening hours.

Bottom line: there is a big price difference at Lisbon Airport. Vodafone is convenient but expensive, while Lycamobile offers much better value if you can find it open.

Best mobile network in Portugal

Portugal has three main mobile networks: NOS, MEO and Vodafone, plus the newer operator Digi.

For most trips, especially if you are visiting Lisbon, Porto or the Algarve, you will hardly notice any difference between the networks. All offer fast and reliable 4G and 5G coverage in cities and along the coast.

If you are planning road trips, visiting rural areas or traveling to islands like Madeira, then NOS and MEO have slightly stronger and more consistent coverage.

Bottom line: Vodafone is perfectly fine for city trips and coastal travel, but NOS or MEO are the safer choice for more extensive travel around Portugal. Unfortunately SIM cards from NOS and MEO are not sold at Lisbon Airport (LIS).

Best SIM card to buy at Lisbon Airport

If you decide to buy a SIM card at Lisbon Airport, your options are limited and the choice is actually quite simple.

Lycamobile is the best value SIM card at Lisbon Airport. For around €10 EUR ($11 USD) you get a large data bundle, making it significantly cheaper than Vodafone.

However, there are a couple of trade-offs. Lycamobile is only available at currency exchange counters and availability depends on opening hours.

Vodafone on the other hand is the most visible and easiest option, with stores in both the luggage area and arrival hall. Staff will help you set everything up, but you will pay a premium for that convenience and get less data.

There are several busses outside the arrival hall, just follow the signs for busses. A ticket costs €5 EUR and can be bought on the bus by credit card. Depending on where you go it takes around 45 minutes to reach your destination in the city center.
