After 10 years on the road I found out that local prepaid SIM cards are in general the cheapest way to stay connected. A great alternative these days are eSIMs, more convenient but also much more expensive.

The best and only way to get mobile data in Marshall Islands is buying a local prepaid SIM card from NTA (National Telecommunications Authority). There is only one mobile operator in the country, so the choice is SIMple.
eSIMs for Marshall Islands: not available. As of February 2026, there is no reliable consumer eSIM option that actually sells and activates an eSIM for Marshall Islands.
What to bring: your passport. NTA registers every SIM card to a passport.

eSIMs for Marshall Islands in 2026
You will see various websites claiming they sell eSIMs for Marshall Islands (for example RORO eSIM, JetSim, Pocket eSIM and Manet Travel eSIM).
In reality, these listings usually lead to missing pages, no inventory, or no actual product for Marshall Islands when you click through.
The bottom line: as of 2026, there is no dependable eSIM for Marshall Islands that you can purchase and activate as a tourist. That means the only realistic way to avoid high roaming charges is to buy a local prepaid SIM card from NTA.

Mobile internet operator in Marshall Islands
There is only one mobile network operator in Marshall Islands: NTA (National Telecommunications Authority). NTA sells prepaid SIM cards and data bundles for visitors.
Because there is no competition, your focus should be on buying an NTA SIM card at the start of your trip and choosing a data plan that fits your usage.
Why buying a SIM card for Marshall Islands is worth it
The number one reason is SIMple: roaming can be extremely expensive. Some roaming rates can be so high that a little background data or opening social media can turn into a painful bill.
Also be careful with overseas roaming day passes that promise "unlimited data". These plans often come with speed caps, which can leave you with very slow data when you need it most.
Having mobile data in Marshall Islands makes traveling much easier. Think about maps, messaging, bank apps, hotel check-ins, tour coordination, and looking up practical information on the go.

Registration process
To buy a prepaid SIM card in Marshall Islands you will need your passport. In the NTA store, staff will take a copy (or photo) of your passport page to register your SIM card.
Important: registration is per SIM card. If you want multiple SIM cards, you generally need a separate passport for each registration.
Where to buy a SIM card for Marshall Islands
Unfortunately the international airport of Majuro has no SIM card shop or kiosk that sells prepaid SIM cards for tourists.
There is only one place on the island where you can buy a prepaid SIM card for Marshall Islands and that is at the Marshall Islands National Telecommunications Authority in town. This is the MI NTA location on Google Maps.
Keep in mind that buying and registering a prepaid SIM card takes time. Life in Marshall Islands moves at a different pace. Expect to wait for a bit and then the registration takes another 10 minutes.
Great thing is though that the Marshall Islands National Telecommunications Authority is open 7 days a week. Yes, also on Saturday and Sunday morning. Opening hours are from 08.00 am till 05.00 pm and in weekends from 09.00 am till 12.00 pm.
Network coverage and data speed in Marshall Islands
With only one mobile internet operator don't have too many expectations. There is no 5G in Marshall Islands.
We rented a car in town, actually nearby the MI NTA office for around $75 USD for 1 day and drove from one end of the island to the other. Pretty much everywhere around the island we had a working data connection on our phone.
To be honest the 4G/LTE data speed wasn’t too bad for downloading and we could mostly watch Instagram stories without any problems.
The upload speed was another story: fairly impossible! On mobile data uploading an Instagram story was extremely slow.
However, we stayed at the Robert Reimers Hotel and the upload speed there was pretty damn amazing, especially in the evening. There is only WiFi in the lobby though, not in the rooms.
Price prepaid SIM card Marshall Islands
The registration of a new Marshall Islands prepaid SIM card costs $10 USD and then you will need to add credit for local or international calls and for data.
Here are the available data packages valid for 1 month:
- 15 GB data = $25 USD
- 50 GB data + 1,000 minutes + 2,500 sms = $50 USD
- Unlimited data, minutes and sms = $70 USD
Buying a local prepaid SIM card in Marshall Islands is not cheap. But for tourists it is always cheaper than using your data roaming.
We were with 2 persons so the total was $70 USD. Two prepaid SIM cards * $10 USD + two bronze data packages * $25 USD.
