Being connected makes traveling around the Dominican Republic much easier. Whether you are ordering an Uber in Santo Domingo, navigating to your hotel in Punta Cana, or finding restaurants and gas stations during a road trip, you will rely on mobile data every day.

On one of my trips I traveled around the country for weeks, driving from Monte Cristi in the northwest all the way to Isla Saona in the southeast. Having mobile internet on the road made a huge difference, especially when navigating long distances, planning stops and staying flexible along the way.

Even though most resorts offer WiFi, you will often lose connection outside your hotel or on the beach. On day trips, excursions or road trips you will be offline without a SIM card. Public WiFi networks are also unsecured, which makes using your own mobile data connection the safer option.

Buying a SIM card at Punta Cana Airport (PUJ)

Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) is the busiest airport in the Dominican Republic, but surprisingly there is still no official tourist SIM card shop at the airport.

On my recent trips I checked again and nothing has changed. If you land in Punta Cana you won’t be able to buy a prepaid SIM card directly on arrival.

The easiest solution is to take a short Uber ride for about $3 USD to BlueMall Punta Cana, just a couple minutes from the airport. Here you will find official stores from Claro and Altice where you can easily buy a prepaid SIM card for tourists.

Buying a SIM card at Santo Domingo Airport

Flying into Santo Domingo is much more convenient. At Las Américas International Airport (SDQ) you can find both a Claro and an Altice store selling prepaid SIM cards for tourists.

In the city center of Santo Domingo you will find plenty of official Claro and Altice stores, and even some Viva shops. If you didn’t get a SIM card at the airport, it is very easy to find one in the city.

Buying a SIM card in Dominican Republic city centers

In major cities like Santo Domingo, Santiago de los Caballeros and La Romana you will find official retail stores from Claro and Altice. These are the best places to buy a SIM card as staff can help you activate your SIM and set up your data plan.

When I traveled around the country by car I found it very easy to stop in cities and buy or top up my SIM card along the way. Coverage of official stores is good in all major towns and tourist areas.

Buying an eSIM for Dominican Republic online

If you want to be connected instantly on arrival then an eSIM is the easiest option. You can install it before your trip and activate it as soon as you land.

Keep in mind that eSIMs for the Dominican Republic are significantly more expensive than local prepaid SIM cards, but they are very convenient if you don’t want to deal with shops or registration on arrival.

Altice is the second largest mobile operator in the Dominican Republic and offers good coverage in major cities and tourist destinations.

In places like Santo Domingo, Santiago and Punta Cana you can expect fast speeds and reliable service. However, once you leave the main cities and travel more inland or along less busy routes, the network is slightly less consistent compared to Claro.

Altice is a good alternative if you find a better deal, but it is not as strong as Claro when it comes to overall coverage.

Viva

Viva is the smallest mobile operator in the Dominican Republic and has a much more limited network footprint.

Coverage is mainly focused around Santo Domingo and a few urban areas, but it is not reliable for traveling around the country. For tourists planning to explore multiple destinations, Viva is not recommended.

Mobile internet in Dominican Republic: 4G and 5G coverage

Mobile internet coverage in the Dominican Republic is very good in cities and tourist areas, but there are noticeable differences between providers when you start traveling around the country.

In major destinations like Punta Cana, Santo Domingo, Santiago, Puerto Plata and the Samaná Peninsula you can expect strong 4G coverage and fast data speeds. However, in more remote areas or when driving long distances between destinations, network reliability becomes more important.

Based on my experience traveling across the country and comparing network coverage, Claro has the best overall mobile network in the Dominican Republic. It offers the most consistent signal nationwide, especially for road trips and rural areas.

Altice performs well in cities and main tourist hubs, but coverage is slightly less reliable once you leave the main routes. Viva has a much smaller network footprint and is not recommended for traveling around the country.

Nomad offers simple and transparent plans without complicated conditions, making it the best value eSIM option for most travelers.

Airalo

Jetpac

My experience buying a sim card in the Dominican Republic

My first time in the Dominican Republic I arrived at Punta Cana Airport and I definitely expected a sim card shop, but unfortunately. When asking around some guy said he knew someone that could fix me a local prepaid sim card. But this practice is a no-go for me.

Luckily the free public WiFi at Punta Cana Airport was working very good and I located the nearest phone shops just a 3 minute Uber ride away. A couple minutes later I was in the Bluemall Punta Cana to buy my prepaid sim card for the Dominican Republic.

Inside the Bluemall Punta Cana I found the Altice and Claro store are next to each other and I inquired at both stores for the prices for prepaid sim cards. However, I already knew that I was going to buy a Claro prepaid sim card for my trip to Dominican Republic.

Why? The 4G/5G network strength!

I booked the Majestic Colonial Punta Cana hotel and before my arrival I inquired at the resort which phone signal was the strongest in the area. Their answer was clear: Claro!

Buying a prepaid sim card at the Claro store in the Bluemall took just a couple minutes and I walked out of the store with a working data connection on my phone. The sim card registration is pretty 'funny' as they need a photo of your face with your new Dominican Republic sim card in your hand.

I only had good experiences using my Claro prepaid sim card for traveling in the Dominican Republic. There were even times I enjoyed a 5G signal but that was only in Santo Domingo and around Punta Cana airport, but that was back in 2023.

I was very surprised about the data speed as in the Caribbean it is not always that good. To my surprise the data speed with my Claro prepaid sim card was on average over 50 Mbps download and 30 Mbps upload according to my speed test.

On another trip my Claro SIM card also worked totally fine in Samana Peninsula, towards the Haiti border and even in Mano Juan on Isla Saona there was an excellent 4G signal. I couldn't believe my eyes when I ran a speed test in Mano Juan, a little remote fishing village on Isla Saona. See the above photo.
