Planning your trip to Djibouti and wondering how to stay connected? In this guide I will tell you everything you need to know about buying a prepaid SIM card or eSIM for Djibouti in 2026.

Djibouti is not your typical travel destination. It is remote, raw and not very tourist-friendly, which makes staying connected even more important. From arranging transport to visiting places like Lake Assal or Lake Abbe, having mobile data makes your trip a lot easier.

I traveled to Djibouti as part of my journey to visit every country in the world and spent a couple days exploring the capital and its surroundings. Just like anywhere else, the first thing I did was trying to get connected.

The good news? Getting a SIM card in Djibouti is simple. The bad news? There is no eSIM available and you also can NOT buy a SIM card at Djibouti Airport (JIB).

In this guide I will explain exactly where to buy a SIM card, how much it costs, how the network coverage is and what the best option is for your trip.

Do you need a SIM card for Djibouti?

Yes, getting a prepaid SIM card in Djibouti is highly recommended. In fact, it is almost essential if you want to travel around the country smoothly.

Djibouti is not a very tourist-friendly destination when it comes to infrastructure. There are hardly any shared tours, public transport is limited and most trips to places like Lake Assal or Lake Abbe require private arrangements and are very expensive.

Having mobile data makes a big difference. You will need it for Google Maps, staying in touch with drivers or guides, checking locations and organizing your trip on the go. Even for emergencies… because I lost my passport in Djibouti and suddenly needed to make a lot of arrangements. Also don’t rely on WiFi. In my experience WiFi in Djibouti is slow, unreliable and not widely available, even in higher-end hotels. For example in the Sheraton as well as in the Kempinski the WiFi was slow.

Where to buy a prepaid SIM card in Djibouti

Buying a SIM card at Djibouti Airport (JIB)

Unfortunately you can NOT buy a prepaid SIM card at Djibouti Ambouli International Airport (JIB).

There are no mobile operator shops or kiosks selling SIM cards for tourists at the airport. The airport is relatively small and even though there have been renovations lately, there is still no SIM card shop on arrival in 2026

This means you will have to arrange transport to the city first and buy a SIM card later in Djibouti City.

Buying a SIM card in Djibouti City

The best place to buy a prepaid SIM card in Djibouti is at an official Djibouti Telecom store in the capital.

I bought my SIM card at the Djibouti Telecom shop in Bawadi Mall, which is the most modern shopping mall in the country and an easy place to visit for travelers. The process was very straightforward and only took a couple minutes.

You need to bring your passport for registration. A copy will be taken and your SIM card will be activated on the spot.

The Djibouti Telecom store in Bawadi Mall is open from around 8.00 am until 5.00 pm, but keep in mind there is a lunch break between 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm.

There are a few other Djibouti Telecom retail points around the city, but for travelers Bawadi Mall is by far the easiest and most convenient location.

Buying an eSIM for Djibouti online

There are currently no eSIM providers that offer coverage in Djibouti.

I checked all major international eSIM providers and none of them offer Djibouti eSIMs. If you want mobile data in Djibouti you will need to buy a local prepaid SIM card after arriving in the city.

Even the most extensive international and global SIM cards do not cover Djibouti.

Prepaid SIM card providers in Djibouti

There is only one mobile network operator in Djibouti: Djibouti Telecom.

This government-owned company has a complete monopoly on the telecom market, meaning there are no competing providers for mobile data, calls or SIM cards.

Djibouti Telecom

Djibouti Telecom is the only provider for prepaid SIM cards in Djibouti. The tourist SIM card is called Evatis and it is available at official retail stores across Djibouti City.

Because there is no competition, there is no need to compare networks or coverage between providers. All mobile services in Djibouti run on the Djibouti Telecom network.

The Evatis SIM card is easy to get, affordable and works well in the capital and surrounding areas. For most travelers this will be the only and best option to stay connected during a trip to Djibouti.

Mobile internet in Djibouti: 4G and 5G coverage

Since there is only one provider in Djibouti, all mobile internet coverage comes from the Djibouti Telecom network.

In general, mobile data coverage in Djibouti is good in Djibouti City and the immediate surroundings, but once you leave the capital coverage quickly becomes more limited.

During my trip I mainly stayed in Djibouti City and had no issues staying connected with 4G. Speeds were decent for everyday use like browsing, Google Maps and messaging. Read more about my trip in my Djibouti travel blog.

However, if you plan to visit places like Lake Assal or Lake Abbe, keep in mind that these are remote desert areas where the network can be weak or even unavailable at times.

Most tourist attractions in Djibouti require long drives through isolated landscapes, so do not expect continuous coverage outside the capital.

Prices of prepaid SIM cards in Djibouti in 2026

Prepaid SIM card prices in Djibouti are very straightforward since there is only one provider.

The tourist SIM card is called Evatis and costs 1,000 DJF (~$6 USD). This includes 500 DJF credit.

IMPORTANT: When putting the Evatis SIM card in your phone, first make turn off mobile data! Because as soon as your sim card gets activated it will connects to 4G network and will use a bit of data in the background. This will eat a little bit of your 500 DJF credit.

This happened to me and I was stuck with 499 DJF credit, so I came 1 DJF short to top up.

The minimum top up for an Evatis sim card is 500 DJF, so I had to go to the supermarket to buy a scratch card. Do not make the same mistake!

However, data packages are very affordable and easy to activate. For example, 5 GB data for 3 days costs 500 DJF (~$3 USD), which is a great deal for short trips.

Below is an overview of the available data packages:

• 1 GB data valid for 1 day - 200 DJF (~$1 USD)
• 5 GB data valid for 3 days - 500 DJF (~$3 USD)
• 12 GB data valid for 7 days - 1,000 DJF (~$6 USD)
• 20 GB data valid for 30 days - 3,000 DJF (~$17 USD)

Considering how expensive traveling in Djibouti can be, a prepaid SIM card is actually one of the cheapest things you will buy during your trip to Djibouti.

What is the best prepaid SIM card for tourists in Djibouti

The best and only prepaid SIM card for tourists in Djibouti is Djibouti Telecom (Evatis).

Since there is only one mobile operator in the country, there is no need to compare providers. The Evatis SIM card offers good 4G coverage in Djibouti City, affordable data packages and is easy to purchase in official stores.

For travel in Djibouti this is simply your best and only option to stay connected.

Best eSIM for Djibouti in 2026

If you are looking for an eSIM for Djibouti then unfortunately there is no good news.

As of 2026 there are no eSIM providers that offer coverage in Djibouti. I checked all major international eSIM providers and none of them include Djibouti in their plans.

• No Holafly unlimited data plans
• No Nomad, Jetpac, Sim Local or Saily coverage
• No regional Africa eSIM that works in Djibouti

Djibouti is one of the few countries in the world where eSIM technology is not yet available for tourists.

Some websites may suggest there are eSIM options, but these are often outdated or misleading and will not actually connect to a network in Djibouti.

However, in Djibouti this choice simply does not exist. There are no eSIM options available for Djibouti, so the only way to get mobile data is by buying a local prepaid SIM card.

The Djibouti Telecom (Evatis) SIM card is affordable, easy to get and works well in the capital, making it the obvious choice for travelers.

If you really want to avoid swapping SIM cards, your only alternative is using international roaming or a global SIM card, but these are significantly more expensive and not always reliable in Djibouti.
