Best SIM Card in Burundi for Tourists (Prepaid + eSIM Guide)

Planning a trip to Burundi and wondering how to stay connected? In this guide I explain everything you need to know about buying a prepaid SIM card in Burundi, including where to buy one, mobile internet coverage, expected prices and whether using an eSIM for Burundi is a good option for your trip.

Burundi is still a very off-the-beaten-path destination and internet access can sometimes be challenging. WiFi in hotels and restaurants is often slow or unreliable, which makes having your own mobile data connection very useful when traveling around the country.

When I arrived at Bujumbura International Airport there was no shop selling prepaid SIM cards. This may have changed in the meantime, but travelers should not rely on being able to buy one immediately after landing.

Do you need a SIM card for Burundi?

Yes, having your own mobile data connection is highly recommended when traveling to Burundi. Public WiFi is limited and even in hotels, restaurants or cafes the internet connection is often slow or unreliable.

Using your home provider with international data roaming can work, but roaming charges can quickly become very expensive. Most travelers therefore prefer buying a prepaid SIM card in Burundi or using an eSIM for Burundi to stay connected.

Having mobile internet is especially useful for ordering taxis, navigating with Google Maps, checking accommodation bookings or staying in contact with drivers and guides while traveling around the country.

Where to buy a prepaid SIM card in Burundi

Tourists visiting Burundi have a few options for buying a SIM card. The easiest way is ordering an eSIM online, the best way is usually visiting an official mobile operator store in Bujumbura after arrival. Below are the main places where travelers can get a SIM card in Burundi.

Buying a SIM card at Bujumbura International Airport

When I arrived at Bujumbura International Airport I did not see any shop selling prepaid SIM cards. Despite Lumitel advertisements around the airport there was no official store available to buy a SIM card on arrival.

This may have changed in the meantime, but travelers should not rely on being able to buy a SIM card immediately after landing in Burundi.

Buying a SIM card in Bujumbura city center

The easiest and most reliable place to buy a prepaid SIM card in Burundi is at the official mobile operator store in Bujumbura. Both Lumitel and Econet have several stores in the city center that can easily be found on Google Maps.

This is also where I bought my Burundi SIM card. The staff helped me register the SIM card, add credit and activate a data bundle. The whole process normally takes only a few minutes once you are at the store.

Buying a SIM card from street vendors

In many African countries it is possible to buy SIM cards from small street kiosks or independent phone shops. This is for example a valid option if you enter Burundi by land border.

But be aware that in Burundi SIM card registration is strictly controlled, which means you usually have to visit an official store to register your SIM card with your passport.

Buying an eSIM for Burundi online

If you prefer to arrange your mobile data before traveling you can also buy an eSIM for Burundi online. A few international providers such as Ubigi, Nomad and Roamless offer limited eSIM data plans that operate on the Lumitel network.

eSIMs can be convenient for staying connected immediately after arrival in Burundi, especially since SIM cards may not always be available at Bujumbura airport. However, these Burundi eSIMs currently only support 3G speeds and are significantly more expensive than local prepaid SIM cards.

SIM card registration in Burundi

When buying a prepaid SIM card in Burundi you will need to show your passport. All SIM cards are registered to your name, which means you normally have to visit an official mobile operator store to buy one.

During the registration process the staff will take a photo of your passport and register your phone number in the system.

When I bought my prepaid SIM card in Bujumbura they also took a photo of me holding the paper with my new Burundi phone number.

The whole process takes a few minutes, but because of this registration requirement it is usually not possible to buy SIM cards from street vendors.

Prepaid SIM card providers in Burundi

Burundi has a small mobile market but there are four providers offering mobile services in the country:

• Lumitel
• Econet Leo
• Smart Mobile
• Onatel

However, not all of these providers are relevant for tourists. Smart Mobile and Onatel operate on much smaller mobile networks and are therefore usually not considered the best SIM cards for travelers.

The two main operators that most tourists will encounter when buying a prepaid SIM card in Burundi are Lumitel and Econet Leo. Both providers offer prepaid SIM cards, mobile data bundles and 3G/4G coverage in the main cities and along major travel routes.

Mobile internet in Burundi: 4G and 5G coverage

Mobile internet coverage in Burundi has improved over the years, but travelers should not expect the same network quality as in many other parts of the world. 3G and 4G networks are available in most cities and along the main roads, but speeds can vary depending on your location.

In cities like Bujumbura, Gitega and other larger towns you can usually expect stable mobile internet with decent 4G speeds. When traveling through rural areas or smaller villages the network often switches to 3G.

According to the latest coverage data from nPerf, Lumitel has the strongest mobile network in Burundi with the best overall 3G and 4G coverage across the country. Econet Leo also offers good coverage in major cities but is generally weaker outside the main urban areas.

This difference becomes noticeable when traveling outside Bujumbura. If you plan to visit tea plantations, rural villages or travel around Lake Tanganyika, having good network coverage can make a big difference.

Is there 5G in Burundi?

No, there is currently no 5G network available in Burundi. Mobile internet in the country relies mainly on 3G and 4G networks.

Prices of prepaid SIM cards in Burundi in 2026

Prepaid SIM cards in Burundi are very affordable. Prices and data bundles can change frequently, but the examples below give a realistic idea of what travelers can expect when buying a prepaid SIM card in Burundi.

Burundi uses the Burundi Franc (BIF). To make things easier for travelers I converted the most common data bundles to approximate USD prices.

Econet Leo

A prepaid SIM card from Econet Leo costs only a few hundred Burundi Francs for the registration. After registering the SIM card you can add credit and activate a data bundle.

• 1 GB for 2 days = ~ $1 USD
• 5 GB for 30 days = ~ $7 – $8 USD
• 9 GB for 30 days = ~ $12 USD

Econet also offers additional packages such as social media bundles, but the above plans give a good indication of the typical prepaid prices.

Lumitel

Lumitel charges around 10,000 BIF (~$3.5 USD) for the registration of a prepaid SIM card for tourists, but it usually includes the same value as credit. That credit can be used for calls or converted into a data bundle.

Lumitel offers many different prepaid data packages including daily, weekly and monthly plans. These are some of the most common options for travelers:

• 6.5 GB for 24 hours = ~ $1.70 USD
• 5 GB for 7 days = ~ $3.50 USD
• 7 GB for 30 days = ~ $7 USD
• 23 GB for 30 days = ~ $17 USD

As you can see, local prepaid SIM cards are extremely affordable in Burundi and offer significantly better value compared to international eSIM plans.

What is the best prepaid SIM card for tourists in Burundi?

After comparing the available mobile operators in Burundi it becomes clear that Lumitel is the best prepaid SIM card for tourists traveling in Burundi.

Lumitel has the strongest mobile network in the country with the best overall 3G and 4G coverage according to the latest coverage data. While Econet Leo also offers good service in larger cities, Lumitel generally performs better when traveling outside urban areas.

Another advantage is the price. Lumitel offers very affordable data bundles with large amounts of data for relatively low prices compared to many other African countries.

Based on my own experience traveling in Burundi I can also confirm that the Lumitel network worked very well. I used my Lumitel SIM card to create a hotspot for my laptop and was able to work online without any issues while staying in Bujumbura and traveling around the countryside.

For most travelers visiting Burundi the best option is therefore buying a Lumitel prepaid SIM card in Bujumbura after arrival.

Best eSIM for Burundi in 2026

There are only a few international providers offering an eSIM for Burundi. Popular eSIM providers like Holafly, Airalo, Saily, etc. do not offer eSIMs for Burundi. At the moment the only reliable options are Nomad, Ubigi and Roamless.

All three providers operate on the Lumitel network, which is good news because Lumitel has the strongest mobile coverage in Burundi. However, there is one important limitation: Burundi eSIMs currently only support 3G speeds. Local prepaid SIM cards offer faster 4G connectivity.

At the moment Ubigi offers the best value eSIM for Burundi thanks to its lower price per GB. However, since all Burundi eSIMs operate on the Lumitel network and are limited to 3G speeds, they are best used as a convenient solution for arrival or short trips rather than as a full replacement for a local prepaid SIM card.

eSIMs vs local prepaid SIM cards in Burundi

 

When deciding between an eSIM and a local prepaid SIM card in Burundi it is important to understand the main differences.

Local prepaid SIM cards are significantly cheaper and also offer faster internet speeds. Lumitel prepaid SIM cards support 4G in many parts of the country and data bundles are very affordable. For example you can get several gigabytes of data for just a few dollars.

eSIM plans for Burundi on the other hand are much more expensive and currently limited to 3G speeds. This makes them less attractive for long stays or heavy data use.

However, eSIMs still have one big advantage: convenience. You can install an eSIM before traveling and have internet access immediately after landing in Burundi. This can be very useful for ordering a taxi, checking maps or contacting your hotel.

Because SIM cards were not available at Bujumbura International Airport when I visited, a small eSIM can be a great solution for the first hours or first day in the country. After arriving in the city center you can then buy a local Lumitel prepaid SIM card for faster speeds and much cheaper data.

My experiences buying a sim card in Burundi

Here are my experiences buying a prepaid sim card in Burundi by the time I visited.

As it was very clear to me which Burundi sim card is the best for traveling around the country I looked on Google Maps for a Lumitel store in Bujumbura city. I of course would have wanted to buy a sim card for Burundi at Bujumbura Airport but there was unfortunately no sim card shop.

When reaching the Lumitel shop in Bujumbura a couple young and friendly local guys jumped out of their seat to help me. I told them I wanted to buy a prepaid sim card for tourists, get it registered and activated, add credit and add a data bundle.

I had to give my passport and it took the guys about 10 minutes before they were done with the registration. They assured me the sim card would be working within 10 minutes and I believed them so I continued sightseeing in Bujumbura and went for lunch nearby.

An hour later the sim card was still not activated so I went back to the guys and asked them what was going on. They again needed my passport, but I told them this time I wasn’t leaving before my Lumitel prepaid sim card was working and I was connected to the internet in Burundi.

It took the guys another 10 minutes, but everything was working smooth now and I was connected to the 4G in Burundi.

Unfortunately I visited Burundi for just 3 days. I rented a car including driver ($70 USD per day including fuel) and drove around the countryside for 2 days to see some tea plantations and local villages before I ended up at a beach resort in Lake Tanganyika.

While on the road I actually mostly enjoyed 4G and sometimes 3G. I was pretty surprised by the network coverage to be honest. In Bujumbura I used my Lumitel prepaid sim card to create a hotspot for my Macbook and it worked very well. 

I was able to do all my online work as usual and did not have any issues. When I ran out of data I topped up with the daily data pack that gave me 6.5 GB data for 24 hour for just 4,999 BIF (~$5 USD).

Things to know before buying a SIM card in Burundi

Bring your passport

When buying a prepaid SIM card in Burundi you will need to show your passport. All SIM cards are registered to your name and the registration is done at the official mobile operator store.

Make sure your phone is unlocked

Your phone must be unlocked in order to use a foreign SIM card. If your phone is locked to your home mobile operator the Burundi SIM card will not work.

Check if your phone supports eSIM

If you want to use an eSIM for Burundi, make sure your phone supports eSIM technology. Most newer smartphones support eSIM, but many older devices do not.

Expect slower internet speeds in rural areas

Mobile coverage in Burundi is generally good in larger cities like Bujumbura, but speeds can drop when traveling through rural areas or smaller villages.

Activate your data bundle immediately

When buying a prepaid SIM card at the operator store the staff can usually activate your data bundle for you. It is always a good idea to test the connection before leaving the shop to make sure everything works correctly.
