Buying a SIM card for Thailand at Bangkok International Airport is the fastest way to get connected when you arrive in Bangkok. Everywhere around the airport you will find SIM card shops from the Thai mobile operators happily selling tourist SIM cards.

You can't miss the SIM card shops at Bangkok Airport. As soon as you walk off the plane and follow the signs to immigration you will already see tourist SIM card kiosks left and right

Then near the luggage belts you will find many SIM card shops all around the baggage claim hall. And with many I mean probably more than 10!

If you still haven't bought a SIM card after picking up your luggage and walking through customs, you will again see big SIM card stores from mobile operators in the arrival hall. There is a large AIS and a True/DTAC store near Exit Gate 6.

Trust me, there is no escaping. There are signs everywhere with: 'buy your SIM card for Thailand here'.

Bangkok BKK Airport has free WiFi which generally works very well. So if you are not convinced by the tourist SIM card deals you can always use the WiFi to order an eSIM for Thailand instead.

Tourist SIM cards at Bangkok Airport are more expensive than shops in the city center. At Bangkok Airport they sell tourist SIM cards for tourist prices. Any convenient store or official phone store in Bangkok sells prepaid SIM cards for tourists.

Opening hours

No need to worry about the opening hours of the SIM card shops at Bangkok Airport BKK if you arrive super late. All the mobile phone stores are open 24 hours.

Cash only

More challenging is that all SIM card kiosks in the baggage claim hall and before customs, only accept cash. This is kind of annoying as you just arrived in Thailand and probably don't have Thai Baht yet.

There are ATMs all around as well as currency exchange. Mind you that all ATMs in Thailand charge a 220 THB fee for withdrawing money. That is around $6 USD per transaction. This applies to all ATMs in Bangkok, there is no escaping!

All phone shops in the arrival hall accept credit card payments. There is a big AIS and DTAC/TRUE store near Exit Gate 6.

Bangkok city center

If you want better and cheaper prepaid SIM card deals for Thailand you have to wait until you reach the city center. Find the nearest official phone store on Google Maps and buy your SIM card for Thailand there.

Traveltomtom recommends buying a Thailand prepaid SIM card in an official retail store from one of the mobile operators in Thailand: AIS or True/DTAC. There are many official phone stores all over Bangkok, just head to any bigger shopping mall and you will find them.

You can also buy prepaid SIM cards in convenience stores like 7-Eleven, etc. Keep in mind that you will have to do the SIM card registration yourself and that the staff won't be able to help you much as they are no SIM card experts.

There are three main mobile networks in Thailand: AIS, True and DTAC. All three offer excellent coverage in Bangkok with fast 4G and widespread 5G.

In recent years True and DTAC merged, which means there are effectively two major network infrastructures left in Thailand: AIS and the combined True/DTAC network.

For travelers arriving at Bangkok Airport the difference between providers is usually small. In general AIS is considered the most reliable network, especially when traveling outside major cities.

AIS sells a big range of tourist SIM card packages at Bangkok Airport (different validity periods and different speed levels).

The most important thing to understand is that data speed matters. The cheaper the package, the more likely it comes with a speed limit like 1 Mbps or 4 Mbps. Which is a very disappointing data speed in 2026.

Although technically two different operators, True and DTAC belong to the same company and operate under the name True DTAC after the recent merger of the two brands.

Mind you that these Infinite Tourist SIMs have an FUP (Fair Use Policy) and your data speed will be slowed down after you reached the high speed limit.

If you are buying a SIM card at Bangkok Airport the good news is that it is actually hard to go wrong. The two main networks available at the airport are AIS and True/DTAC, and both offer excellent coverage and fast 4G/5G speeds across Bangkok and the main tourist destinations in Thailand.
