If you’re traveling to Ivory Coast and want mobile internet during your trip, buying a prepaid SIM card is still one of the most common solution for visitors to avoid high roaming costs.

My Recommendation
If your phone supports eSIM, I honestly recommend buying an Ivory Coast eSIM online before you fly. It saves time, avoids language barriers, and you don’t need to deal with SIM registration at the airport. Ivory Coast eSIMs already start from around $5 USD.
However, if you specifically want a physical prepaid SIM card, your best option is to visit an official Orange store. Orange has the most advanced mobile network across the country and in rural areas in Ivory Coast.
MTN or Moov Africa are approved as well if you just visit Abidjan.
Buying a sim card at Abidjan Airport is also possible, but options are limited or you will have to go the unofficial way. I’ve done it all, and simple conclusion that city stores are almost always cheaper and easier than airport kiosks or sim card vendors.
Best eSIM for Ivory Coast (Alternative Option)
Even though this guide focuses on physical SIM cards, eSIMs have become the most convenient way to get mobile data in Ivory Coast.

There are three main mobile networks in Ivory Coast:
- Orange Ivory Coast – best overall coverage and speeds
- MTN Ivory Coast – solid nationwide network
- Moov Africa – usually the cheapest option
During my travels, Orange delivered the most consistent performance, especially outside Abidjan. If you are traveling to rural areas in Ivory Coast and you want the best network connection buy an Orange prepaid sim card.

Prepaid SIM cards in Ivory Coast are affordable, expect to pay around $1 per Gigabyte.
Typical tourist prices in 2026:
- 5–10 GB data: $10 – $15 USD
- 15–25 GB data: $15 – $25 USD
- Unlimited-style bundles: $20+ (usually with fair-use limits)
Most SIM cards are valid for 30 days. Prices depend on promotions and provider. You can try to check the official MTN, Orange or Moov website for the latest information. However, often they are not responding or not really up to date.
Where to Buy a Prepaid SIM Card in Ivory Coast
At the Airport (Including Abidjan Airport)
You can buy SIM cards at major airports, including Félix Houphouët-Boigny International Airport in Abidjan. There are no official stores, but there is a lot of staff from Orange, MTN and Moov around.
In Bouake Airport you might stumble upon some pop up tents just outside the terminal.
I personally bought a SIM card at Abidjan Airport and filmed the entire process for my YouTube channel.
While it’s convenient, airport SIM cards usually come with limited plan choices and higher prices. Depending on your arrival time 'stores' might be closed. Don't expect eSIMs, just normal physical prepaid sim cards.
If you go this route, expect some hassle and frustration. But if you are a seasoned traveler in West Africa than I am sure you will survive.
Official Mobile Stores (Best Option)
The best place to buy a prepaid SIM card in Ivory Coast is at an official Orange, MTN, or Moov Africa store in the city. eSIMs are available.
You’ll find stores in Abidjan and most major towns. Staff are generally more helpful, and you’ll have access to better-value plans than at the airport.
This is the option I recommend if you’re staying in Ivory Coast for more than a couple of days.
You will receive either a physical prepaid sim card or an eSIM that comes with an Ivory Coast phone number that starts with +225.
Remember that if you buy an eSIM via Airalo or SimOptions you can avoid all the hassle of buying a prepaid sim card in Ivory Coast.
What You Need to Buy a SIM Card in Ivory Coast
You must present your passport or ID when purchasing a prepaid SIM card the official way. Registration is mandatory.
The staff will usually activate the SIM for you, and you’ll leave the store with working mobile data.
Coverage & Mobile Internet Speeds
Mobile coverage in Ivory Coast is pretty good in cities and along main roads.

If you are planning to travel to Ivory Coast for more than a week and you will need more than 2 GB per day it is worth to buy a local prepaid sim card in a phone store in Ivory Coast on arrival.
However, in 2026, eSIMs are simply more convenient. They save time, remove paperwork, and often cost less than tourist SIM cards at the airport.
As someone who travels full-time and reviews SIM cards professionally, my honest recommendation is to have an eSIM for Ivory Coast installed on your phone. When you then feel you are going to use a lot of data then you can still always pop into an Orange store and buy a local prepaid sim card.
My experience buying a sim card for Ivory Coast
My first trip to Ivory Coast was in 2022 but at that time I couldn't buy a tourist sim card at Abidjan Airport. My plane arrived in the middle of the night and there was only a dodgy guy willing to sell me a pre-activated sim card. I declined his offer.
The next day I went to an MTN shop nearby my hotel and got a local prepaid sim card. On my first trip to Ivory Coast I mainly stayed in and around Abidjan.
When I came back in 2024 the same story. I arrived during the night and no official sim card sellers where around and the Orange pop up store outside the terminal was closed as well. I forgot to install an eSIM so I had no choice...
Because I needed to get into my Airbnb and find my friends I bought a pre-registered prepaid sim card from a random guy at the airport. Sim cards for tourists are free in Ivory Coast, but it comes with no allowance nor credit.
However, around this time of day there were only a couple random people walking around selling pre-registered sim cards and they were asking $5 USD. You can negotiate the price down if you want.
It is the unofficial way. No passport, no official registration. It is plug and play! I gave the guy some extra cash to add some credit and I converted the credit into a data plan.
End good, all good. But a lot of hassle! Trust me, always get yourself an eSIM for Ivory so you have at least some data when you arrive. I learned it the hard way.
The data speed on my Orange prepaid sim card was pretty good. I traveled mainly to Bouake and Abidjan and was very content with the performance of my Orange prepaid sim card.
From the above speed test you can see that the data speed in Abidjan was not disappointing at all with often more than 100 Mbps download speed and around 50 Mbps upload speed. I will be honest, I didn't expect this from the mobile data speed in West Africa.
