I just came back from another trip to Egypt where I did a Nile Cruise from Luxor to Aswan, one of the most popular travel routes in the country. During the entire cruise my Vodafone Egypt prepaid SIM card had an excellent connection almost all the way, even while sailing through more remote stretches along the Nile.

That recent experience confirmed again why Vodafone is the prepaid SIM card I personally use in Egypt. It is not always the cheapest provider, but for tourists traveling around Egypt, network coverage and reliability matter much more than saving a few dollars.

I have traveled to Egypt multiple times and tested different mobile networks across the country. While visiting remote islands in the Red Sea I found out that some SIM cards simply had no signal, so I quickly learned that not every prepaid SIM card in Egypt performs the same.

Personally, I mostly buy a local prepaid SIM card in Egypt depending on the length of my trip. A tourist SIM gives me the best value for money, fast data speeds and the most reliable network coverage. Especially if you are a heavy data user, a local SIM card is by far the cheapest option.

There are several places to buy a prepaid SIM card in Egypt, but for most tourists the easiest option is to get one straight after landing at the airport. Alternatively, you can visit official mobile operator stores in major cities like Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor or Hurghada.

Buying a SIM card at Cairo International Airport

The best place to buy a prepaid SIM card for tourists in Egypt is at Cairo International Airport. SIM card kiosks are located right next to the luggage belts, so you can’t miss them.

The registration process is straightforward, you only need your passport and your SIM card will be activated within a couple of minutes.

From my own experience, buying a SIM card at the airport is generally very easy, but not always perfect. When I arrived in Hurghada at 3.00 AM I wanted to buy a Vodafone SIM card, but the Vodafone staff was not available at that moment. So I had to choose another provider. If you didn’t get a SIM card at the airport, you can easily buy one in city centers across Egypt. There are official stores from Vodafone, Orange and Etisalat in all major tourist destinations like Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor, Aswan and Hurghada.

I recommend buying your SIM card from an official mobile operator store. Prices are transparent, staff is trained and if something goes wrong it can be fixed on the spot.

Buying a SIM card from street vendors

In some places you will also find SIM cards sold at small phone shops or even street vendors, like I saw in Alexandria where a WE truck was selling tourist SIM cards on a public square and in Siwa on the main square I saw a Vodafone truck selling prepaid SIM cards.

Although it might be tempting, I generally don’t recommend buying your SIM card here. Prices are often higher, you may need to negotiate and support is limited if something doesn’t work properly.

Buying an eSIM for Egypt online

If you want to skip the hassle completely then buying an eSIM for Egypt online is the easiest option. You can install your eSIM in a couple of minutes and be connected as soon as your plane lands.

Mobile internet providers in Egypt: Vodafone vs Orange vs Etisalat vs WE

There are four main mobile network operators in Egypt: Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt, Etisalat Egypt and WE (Telecom Egypt). All providers sell prepaid SIM cards for tourists, but there are clear differences in network coverage, reliability and value for money.

Based on my travel experience in Egypt and comparing mobile data coverage across the country, Vodafone is the best prepaid SIM card provider in Egypt. It is not always the cheapest, but it is the most reliable option if you travel beyond Cairo and visit places like Luxor, Aswan, the Nile Valley, the Red Sea coast or remote desert areas.

Vodafone Egypt

Vodafone is the best mobile network operator in Egypt in terms of coverage and reliability. It has the strongest signal across the country, including popular tourist routes like Cairo to Luxor, the Nile Valley and along the Red Sea coast.

Orange Egypt

Etisalat Egypt

Etisalat has decent coverage in major cities but is less reliable when traveling around Egypt. In more remote areas, along the Red Sea and on longer travel routes the signal can be weaker compared to Vodafone and Orange.

It is a budget-friendly option, but based on my own experience with weak 4G signal and confusing top-ups, Etisalat is not my preferred choice for tourists in Egypt.

WE (Telecom Egypt)

WE is the newest mobile operator in Egypt. Although it offers cheap prepaid plans, the network coverage is significantly weaker compared to Vodafone, Orange and Etisalat.

For tourists traveling around Egypt, WE is generally not recommended.

4G and 5G network coverage in Egypt

Mobile internet coverage in Egypt is generally good, especially in big cities and along the main tourist routes. In cities like Cairo, Alexandria, Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada all providers offer strong 4G coverage. But once you start traveling further into the country, for example along the Nile Valley or towards remote desert areas, the difference in network quality becomes very clear.

Based on my own research and travel experience in Egypt, Vodafone has the best mobile data coverage in Egypt, followed by Orange. Etisalat is less consistent and WE has the weakest network.

On another trip I traveled from El Gouna to Luxor via the Dendara Temple, a 4-hour drive through the desert. Even in these remote areas I was still connected most of the time with Vodafone, which clearly shows the difference in network coverage.

In contrast, I experienced that some networks completely lose signal in more remote areas. On islands in the Red Sea and even at resorts just outside Hurghada, certain providers had no connection at all, while Vodafone continued to work.

The main reason is simple: Vodafone has the most reliable mobile data coverage across Egypt. It performs well in cities like Cairo and Alexandria, but the real difference becomes clear when you travel around the country.

On my recent Nile Cruise from Luxor to Aswan, my Vodafone SIM card had excellent connection almost the entire way. I also had good experiences with Vodafone along the Red Sea coast and on longer travel routes through more remote parts of Egypt.

Vodafone is not the cheapest SIM card in Egypt, but for me it is worth paying a little more for better reliability. When you are using Google Maps, ordering an Uber, checking travel information or uploading content on the go, a stable connection matters more than saving a few dollars.

My experiences buying a prepaid SIM card in Egypt for tourists

The first time that I visited Egypt I arrived at Cairo Airport. I had not done my research for the best tourist SIM and the WiFi wasn't working. Based on the data plan prices I got myself an Etisalat prepaid SIM card with 20 GB data.

The first week I spent in and around Cairo and I was surprised how many times the Etisalat 4G/LTE signal was pretty weak. Especially going into buildings, I could often not connect to 4G.

Unfortunately I couldn't tether my Macbook to my phone as I did not have a signal in my room in the heart of Cairo and neither in some nearby coffee shops. Pretty damn annoying as I rather work on 4G/LTE than rely on WiFi. 

On the streets it was mostly fine, but even in rush hour, being stuck in a taxi in the middle of Cairo, my 4G/LTE Etisalat SIM card wasn't working properly.

After about 10 days my 20 GB data ran out and I wanted to top up. After I downloaded the Etisalat Egypt app, I tried to find the right data bundle, but honestly couldn’t find it.

It was very complicated with multiple types of bundles, but couldn't just find one with a lot of GB. I found Etisalat very difficult to use and pretty frustrating. Also their sms service is in Arabic only and you will need to copy paste everything to Google Translate.

Therefore I switched to Vodafone and had a much smoother experience. Yes, Vodafone is more expensive but at least I didn't have the connection issues and my data went a long way. Back then Vodafone had an ongoing offer with double data.

Unfortunately the Vodafone sms service is completely in Arabic as well even though in the Vodafone store they tried changing it to English.

They will tell you to download the Vodafone App, but that is NOT possible for most iPhone users as Vodafone Egypt is only available in the Egypt iStore and not visible for foreigners.

Vodafone Egypt still has a lot of things to improve when it comes to customer service. However, my overall experience using a Vodafone Egypt prepaid SIM card was great.

• Bring cash (Egyptian Pounds): although some airport kiosks accept credit cards, many stores prefer cash payments.
• Check if your phone is unlocked: your phone must be unlocked to use a local SIM card from Egypt.
• Data bundles can be confusing: some providers use flexible bundles/units instead of straight GB. In practice it works fine, but it can look more complicated than it really is.
• Coverage matters more than price: the cheapest SIM card is not always the best choice, especially if you plan to travel around Egypt.
• Activation is usually instant: in most cases your SIM card will be activated within a couple of minutes after purchase.

This is one of the reasons why I always recommend buying your SIM card from an official Vodafone, Orange or Etisalat store. The staff is trained, the process is quick and everything is done correctly. Registration usually takes no more than a couple of minutes.

After registration you will receive your SIM card with a local Egyptian phone number starting with +20. Always insert the SIM card into your phone before leaving the store and make sure your data plan is active and working properly.

It is also a good idea to ask the staff how to check your remaining data balance and how to top up your SIM card if needed.

If you prefer to skip the registration process completely, then an eSIM for Egypt is the easiest alternative. You can set it up online without showing your passport and be connected instantly when you arrive.
