The SIM card shops are located at the luggage belts, not in the arrival hall. This means you have to buy your SIM card before passing the final customs check. Once you leave the baggage claim area, you cannot go back.
All four mobile operators in Egypt have a presence at Cairo Airport: Vodafone, Orange, Etisalat and WE. You will find their kiosks directly next to the baggage belts:
- Vodafone, Etisalat and WE - luggage belts 4 and 5
- Orange - luggage belt 1
The SIM card stands are open 24 hours a day, so even if you arrive late at night you will still be able to buy a SIM card.
You can pay by credit card or cash. Visa and Mastercard are accepted, but American Express is often not accepted. Cash payments in Egyptian Pounds are also possible. Sometimes they even take USD and Euros if you are friendly with them.
Tip: always insert your SIM card into your phone before leaving the counter and make sure your data is working properly.
SIM card registration at Cairo Airport
When buying a prepaid SIM card at Cairo Airport you only need to show your passport. At the kiosk they will take a copy of your passport as well as your Egypt visa with the entry stamp and register the SIM card on your name.
Unlike in some other countries, you do not need a fingerprint and photo. The registration process is SIMple and usually takes just a couple of minutes.

Vodafone offers the most reliable network coverage in Egypt and is the best choice for tourists traveling beyond Cairo.
Orange Egypt

Orange is a cheaper alternative with good performance in cities, but slightly less reliable outside urban areas.

If you are planning to travel around Egypt, Vodafone is the safest choice. For short city trips, Orange or Etisalat can be cheaper alternatives, but they are less consistent outside urban areas.
Orange is a solid alternative to Vodafone. Etisalat prepaid SIM cards are cheaper compared to Vodafone and Orange. But lately I tested an Etisalat SIM card in Cairo and Hurghada and was pretty disappointed with the signal strength: weak inside buildings and rural areas.
WE SIM cards are the least recommended due to their weak network coverage.

My experience buying a SIM card at Cairo Airport
On my first time trip to Cairo it took me about 30 minutes to figure out all the SIM card information, prices and details for this article. So I did proper research and I also filmed a YouTube video what it was like arriving at Cairo Airport and buying a tourist SIM.
At that time I had no clue what was the best mobile internet provider in Egypt and I bought an Etisalat SIM card as the staff was very nice and patient with me.
There is free WiFi at Cairo Airport, but at that time I could not connect to it. I wanted to look up the mobile internet network coverage in Egypt for all the mobile internet providers.
As that wasn't possible, I had to believe what they told me, but all mobile internet providers of course told me that their network was great. Since Etisalat was offering the best SIM card deals at that time, I decided to go with them.
So I wrote this Cairo Airport SIM card guide so you are not making the same mistake! There is only one recommended SIM card for Egypt: Vodafone!
Why was I not satisfied with Etisalat? After WE, Etisalat has the weakest network coverage in Egypt. Rather often the signal was weak. Right in the middle of Cairo, the capital of Egypt I was suffering to find a strong signal and fast data speed!
Sorry Etisalat, but I expected better network coverage and faster data speed.
A friend of mine had an Orange prepaid SIM card for Egypt so I could compare. As expected his network was constantly stronger than mine, especially inside buildings. Etisalat network performance inside buildings was pretty poor and that was in Cairo, imagine outside of the capital.
On a recent trip to Hurghada I tested Etisalat again and it was the exact same story. Vodafone had good signal in my resort and on the islands in the Red Sea, the Etisalat signal was either 3G or not working at all.
