What To Pack for Canada in Winter? Packing List With 19 Items

Planning a trip to Canada in winter? I recently traveled to Alberta, Canada to experience the city of Edmonton, Lake Louise, Banff and Jasper National Park in winter and participated in all kinds of winter activities from snowboarding to ice climbing and spotting wildlife in Alberta.

Since it can get very cold in Canada in winter with freezing temperatures from -5 to -30 degrees Celsius (23 to -22 F), it’s necessary properly to pack for winter travel. Warm clothes to wear in extreme cold weather conditions, not only in Canada, but this winter packing list can basically be used for all countries with these cold temperatures.

Did you know there are plenty opportunities to spot wildlife in Alberta in winter? Although all bears are obviously having their winter sleep and there are less birds in winter, you are still able to spot lots of animals in Alberta, like elk, deer, moose, goats, bighorn sheep, coyotes, wolves, owls, birds, bison and the elusive lynx and cougar or mountain lion. Therefore, I would recommend spotting wildlife as one of the best things to do in Alberta in winter.

Best Prepaid SIM Card for Canada in 2026: A Guide for Tourists

You are not alone. Getting mobile data in Canada can be surprisingly confusing and, compared to many other countries, also quite expensive.

Normally I would say: just buy a local prepaid SIM card at the airport or in a phone shop and you are good to go. But Canada is different. Some of the biggest mobile operators like Bell and Rogers don’t even properly offer prepaid SIM cards for tourists anymore and instead redirect you to smaller sub-brands with different networks, speeds and pricing structures.

On top of that, prepaid SIM card plans in Canada are not cheap. In fact, Canada is known for having some of the highest mobile data prices in the world. So before you blindly buy a SIM card on arrival, it is worth understanding how the system works and what your best option really is.

The only thing I knew was that I really wanted to visit Parliament Hill, to see where all the important decisions are made in Canada. But after spending three lovely days in Ottawa I left the city, impressed by everything I did, saw and experienced those past three days.

For some reason I find capital cities very interesting to visit. They always have that extra something to offer. When traveling the East of Canada for about two weeks I visited Ottawa. Please let me take you to Ottawa, tell you all about this wonderful capital city, and make you just as excited about Ottawa as I am.
