AT&T and Movistar prepaid SIM cards can be cheaper, and they usually work fine if you only stay in Playa del Carmen. But most travelers also visit places like Tulum, Cancun, Cozumel, cenotes, Valladolid, Merida, Bacalar or Isla Holbox. Once you start traveling around, Telcel is the safer choice.

When you compare that with an Airalo eSIM for Mexico, the difference is not huge anymore. Airalo offers 10 GB data for around $17 USD and 20 GB data for around $30 USD, and you can install it before your trip.

That makes an eSIM a very strong option for data-only travelers, especially if you are flying into Cancun Airport and want to be connected immediately. There are 3 main mobile internet providers in Playa del Carmen: Telcel, AT&T and Movistar. All 3 providers sell prepaid SIM cards in Mexico, but for tourists traveling around the Riviera Maya and Yucatan Peninsula, they are not equal.

For Playa del Carmen itself, AT&T and Movistar can work perfectly fine. The problem starts when you travel beyond town. Most people visiting Playa del Carmen also make trips to places like Tulum, Cancun, cenotes, Cozumel, Akumal, Isla Mujeres, Valladolid, Merida or Isla Holbox. That is where choosing the strongest network becomes more important.

Telcel has the best 4G/5G network coverage in Mexico and is the provider I recommend if you are planning to travel around the Yucatan Peninsula or further into Mexico.

All of the Mexican mobile internet providers AT&T, Movistar and Telcel have retail shops around Playa del Carmen and it is not hard to find them.

In Plaza de las Americas, one of the most prominent shopping malls in Playa del Carmen there is an AT&T store as well as authorized Telcel distributors. A Movistar store is not directly in Plaza de las America, but just a couple blocks away.

You can also buy a prepaid SIM card in bigger convenience stores as well as supermarkets, but these options are of course self service. I recommend you going to a mobile phone shop.
