buying a SIM card in Playa del Carmen

Are you traveling to Playa del Carmen, Cancun, Tulum or anywhere else in the Riviera Maya and wondering where to buy a SIM card? This guide shows you everything you need to know about buying a SIM card in Playa del Carmen in 2026, including the best mobile network, updated prepaid SIM card prices, where to buy one and whether an eSIM is now the easier option.

Playa del Carmen is one of the easiest places in the Riviera Maya to buy a local prepaid SIM card because there are official mobile operator stores, shopping malls and convenience stores all around town. However, that does not automatically mean that buying a local SIM card is always the best choice anymore. If you only need mobile data, an eSIM for Mexico can be almost just as good value and much more convenient.

My recommendation for Playa del Carmen is simple: if you want to buy a local prepaid SIM card, choose Telcel. Telcel has the best mobile network in Mexico and is the safest choice if you are traveling beyond Playa del Carmen to places like Isla Mujeres, Isla Holbox, Merida, Valladolid, Bacalar or other places around the Yucatan Peninsula.

I have traveled extensively around Mexico, especially explored the Yucatan Peninsula thoroughly. In my experience, mobile data in Mexico is something you want to arrange properly, especially if you are renting a car, using Google Maps, booking tours, ordering taxis, staying in Airbnbs or traveling to beaches and islands where WiFi can be unreliable.

In this updated Playa del Carmen SIM card guide I will explain where to buy a prepaid SIM card, why Telcel is my recommended provider, how much prepaid SIM cards cost, why Cancun Airport is not a great place to buy a SIM card and when it makes more sense to order an eSIM before your trip.

Quick Recommendation - Playa del Carmen SIM Card 2026

πŸ“ Best prepaid SIM card in Playa del Carmen: Telcel. It has the best mobile network in Mexico and is my top recommendation if you want to buy a local SIM card in Playa del Carmen.

πŸ“Ά Best network: Telcel. AT&T and Movistar are far behind Telcel.

πŸ’° Price indication: A Telcel prepaid SIM card plan with about 5 GB data is 300 MXN (~$17 USD).

πŸͺ Where to buy: go to an official Telcel store in Playa del Carmen for the easiest setup. You can also buy SIM cards in convenience stores like OXXO or 7-Eleven, but activation can be more of a do-it-yourself process.

πŸ›¬ Cancun Airport warning: there are no proper tourist SIM card shops at Cancun Airport. If you want a local SIM card, Playa del Carmen is a much better place to buy one.

πŸ“² Best data-only alternative: an Airalo eSIM for Mexico. If you only need mobile data, an eSIM is often easier than buying a local SIM card and can be arranged online before your trip.

🌍 Useful extra guide: for a full countrywide comparison, read my guide for buying a prepaid SIM card in Mexico.

⚠️ Important: Telcel prepaid plans often include unlimited social media, but this does not mean unlimited internet. TikTok and YouTube are not included in the unlimited social media allowance.

Best SIM card for Playa del Carmen

The best SIM card for Playa del Carmen is Telcel. If you want to buy a local prepaid SIM card in Playa del Carmen, Telcel is the provider I recommend because it has the best mobile network in Mexico and the strongest coverage around the Riviera Maya and Yucatan Peninsula.

AT&T and Movistar prepaid SIM cards can be cheaper, and they usually work fine if you only stay in Playa del Carmen. But most travelers also visit places like Tulum, Cancun, Cozumel, cenotes, Valladolid, Merida, Bacalar or Isla Holbox. Once you start traveling around, Telcel is the safer choice.

For that reason, my recommendation is simple: buy a Telcel prepaid SIM card if you want a Mexican phone number, local calls and SMS. If you only need mobile data, an Airalo eSIM for Mexico is a very convenient alternative because it also uses the Telcel network and can be installed before your trip.

Is it worth buying a SIM card in Playa del Carmen?

Buying a SIM card in Playa del Carmen is worth it if you want a Mexican phone number, local calls, SMS or if you are staying in Mexico for a longer time and want to top up locally.

However, if you only need mobile data, a local prepaid SIM card is no longer the obvious best choice. Telcel prepaid plans are reliable, but they are not extremely cheap. For example, Telcel offers around 5.5 GB data for 300 MXN, about $17 USD, and 8 GB data for 500 MXN, about $28 USD.

When you compare that with an Airalo eSIM for Mexico, the difference is not huge anymore. Airalo offers 10 GB data for around $17 USD and 20 GB data for around $30 USD, and you can install it before your trip.

That makes an eSIM a very strong option for data-only travelers, especially if you are flying into Cancun Airport and want to be connected immediately. There are no proper tourist SIM card shops at Cancun Airport, so if you do not want to search for a Telcel store after arrival, an eSIM is much easier.

My honest advice is simple: buy a local Telcel SIM card in Playa del Carmen if you need calling, texting or a Mexican phone number. Choose an eSIM if you only need data and want the most convenient way to get connected.

Mobile internet providers and best network in Playa del Carmen

att playa del carmen

There are 3 main mobile internet providers in Playa del Carmen: Telcel, AT&T and Movistar. All 3 providers sell prepaid SIM cards in Mexico, but for tourists traveling around the Riviera Maya and Yucatan Peninsula, they are not equal.

Quick network verdict

πŸ₯‡ Telcel: best mobile network in Playa del Carmen, the Riviera Maya and Mexico in general.

πŸ₯ˆ AT&T Mexico: can be cheaper and works fine in Playa del Carmen, but has weaker coverage once you travel around.

πŸ₯‰ Movistar Mexico: usually the weakest option for tourists. Cheap plans, but not the provider I recommend for traveling in Mexico.

For Playa del Carmen itself, AT&T and Movistar can work perfectly fine. The problem starts when you travel beyond town. Most people visiting Playa del Carmen also make trips to places like Tulum, Cancun, cenotes, Cozumel, Akumal, Isla Mujeres, Valladolid, Merida or Isla Holbox. That is where choosing the strongest network becomes more important.

Telcel has the best 4G/5G network coverage in Mexico and is the provider I recommend if you are planning to travel around the Yucatan Peninsula or further into Mexico.

βœ… My advice: choose Telcel if you want the best prepaid SIM card in Playa del Carmen.

πŸ’° Choose AT&T or Movistar only if: you mainly stay in Playa del Carmen and want the cheapest possible local SIM card.

πŸ“ Traveling around the region? Telcel is the safer choice, especially for day trips, road trips, islands and smaller beach towns.

Where to buy a SIM card in Playa del Carmen

movistar playa del carmen

All of the Mexican mobile internet providers AT&T, Movistar and Telcel have retail shops around Playa del Carmen and it is not hard to find them.

In Plaza de las Americas, one of the most prominent shopping malls in Playa del Carmen there is an AT&T store as well as authorized Telcel distributors. A Movistar store is not directly in Plaza de las America, but just a couple blocks away.

You can also buy a prepaid SIM card in bigger convenience stores as well as supermarkets, but these options are of course self service. I recommend you going to a mobile phone shop.

For buying a prepaid SIM card in Playa del Carmen you don't need to bring a passport. Just bring Pesos! :)

Prices for prepaid SIM cards in Playa del Carmen

Prepaid SIM card prices in Playa del Carmen depend on the mobile operator and the package you choose. Since Telcel is my recommended provider, I will use Telcel prepaid plans as the main price example.

These are examples of Telcel prepaid packages that are useful for tourists:

Telcel prepaid planDataValidityPriceBest for
Amigo Sin LΓmite 300 5.5 GB 30 days 300 MXN (~$17 USD) Light data users who want a local Mexican SIM card.
Amigo Sin LΓmite 500 8 GB 30 days 500 MXN (~$28 USD) Travelers who want more data and a longer-valid local plan.

Telcel prepaid plans usually include unlimited calls and SMS in Mexico, plus unlimited use of selected social media and messaging apps. However, this does not mean unlimited internet. Apps like TikTok and YouTube are not included in the unlimited social media allowance.

AT&T and Movistar prepaid plans are often cheaper than Telcel, and they can be fine if you mostly stay in Playa del Carmen. The trade-off is network coverage. Once you travel around the Riviera Maya, visit islands, rent a car or continue through the Yucatan Peninsula, Telcel is the safer choice.

For data-only travelers, also compare these prices with an Airalo eSIM for Mexico. Airalo offers 10 GB for around $17 USD and 20 GB for around $30 USD, which makes eSIMs very competitive if you do not need a Mexican phone number.

Can you buy a SIM card at Cancun Airport?

Most travelers visiting Playa del Carmen first arrive at Cancun International Airport. Unfortunately, Cancun Airport is not a good place to buy a prepaid SIM card for Mexico.

There are no proper tourist SIM card shops at Cancun Airport where you can easily buy a Telcel, AT&T or Movistar prepaid SIM card on arrival. This is surprising because Cancun Airport is the main gateway to the Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Isla Mujeres, Isla Holbox and many other popular places in Quintana Roo.

You might find some random guys or souvenir shops sometimes offering tourist SIM cards, but do not count on finding a reliable local SIM card setup at Cancun Airport. If you want a local prepaid SIM card, it is better to buy one after arrival in Playa del Carmen at an official Telcel store.

πŸ›¬ Arriving at Cancun Airport? Do not rely on buying a SIM card at the airport.

πŸ“ Best local option: buy a Telcel prepaid SIM card in Playa del Carmen after arrival.

πŸ“² Easiest option: order an Airalo eSIM for Mexico before your trip and arrive connected as soon as the plane lands. For a complete overview of eSIM options, check out my guide to the best eSIM for Mexico.

Best sim card for Playa del Carmen

For Traveltomtom there is only one conclusion when choosing the best prepaid sim card for Playa del Carmen and that is Telcel.

The Telcel mobile data network is so much better than Movistar and AT&T. I compared the network coverage maps of the mobile internet operators. For more details check my guide on how to buy a prepaid sim card in Mexico.

Best eSIM for Playa del Carmen

If you only need mobile data, then an eSIM is the easiest way to stay connected in Playa del Carmen. You can order it online, install it before your flight and use mobile data as soon as you land in Mexico.

For Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya, I recommend choosing an eSIM that clearly uses the Telcel network. Telcel has the best mobile network in Mexico and is the safest choice if you are also traveling to Tulum, Cancun, cenotes, Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, Merida, Valladolid or Isla Holbox.

πŸ“² Best eSIM for Playa del Carmen: Airalo eSIM for Mexico.

πŸ“Ά Network: Airalo uses Telcel in Mexico.

πŸ’° Price indication: Airalo offers 10 GB for around $17 USD and 20 GB for around $30 USD.

βœ… Best for: data-only travelers who want to avoid finding a SIM card shop after arrival.

A local Telcel prepaid SIM card is still useful if you need a Mexican phone number, local calls and SMS. But for most tourists visiting Playa del Carmen who only need data for Google Maps, WhatsApp, booking apps, restaurant searches and social media, an eSIM is often the more convenient choice.

Final thoughts on buying a SIM card in Playa del Carmen

The best SIM card for Playa del Carmen is Telcel. It is not always the cheapest prepaid SIM card in Mexico, but it has the best mobile network and that matters once you start traveling beyond Playa del Carmen.

AT&T and Movistar prepaid SIM cards can be cheaper and may work fine if you only stay in town. But most travelers who visit Playa del Carmen also explore the Riviera Maya and the Yucatan Peninsula. For trips to Tulum, cenotes, Valladolid, Merida, Bacalar, Cozumel, Isla Mujeres or Isla Holbox, I would rather choose Telcel than save a few dollars on a weaker network.

During my trips around the Yucatan Peninsula I used Playa del Carmen as a practical base and quickly learned why mobile data is so important in this part of Mexico. Whether you are renting a car, finding cenotes, checking ferry times, using Google Maps, booking accommodation or looking for restaurants, reliable mobile internet makes traveling so much easier.

For road trips to places like Rio Lagartos, Cozumel, Costa Maya, Valladolid and Isla Holbox, I would definitely choose Telcel for the strongest coverage.

That said, buying a local prepaid SIM card in Playa del Carmen is not always necessary anymore. If you need a Mexican phone number, local calls, SMS and local top-up options, go to a Telcel store and buy a local prepaid SIM card. If you only need data, an eSIM for Mexico is often the easier option.

If you are planning a bigger trip around the region, check out my Yucatan Peninsula itinerary and my guide with the best places to visit in Mexico. These guides will also show why choosing the right mobile network is useful when traveling around Mexico.

My final advice is simple: choose Telcel if you want the best local SIM card in Playa del Carmen. Choose an eSIM if you only need mobile data and want to arrive connected without searching for a SIM card shop.

Enjoy your trip to Playa del Carmen!
