I don’t travel to collect countries or chase records. I travel because it makes me feel alive.
I’m Tom, an adventure traveler from the Netherlands, living a full-time nomadic life since 2012. What started with my first trip around the world in 2008 turned into a journey of more than 4,599 days on the road, traveling continuously through 160+ countries.
I don’t travel to collect countries or chase records. I travel because it makes me feel alive. Because it teaches me, challenges me, and makes me a better person every single day.
What began as a passion slowly became a lifestyle — and eventually Traveltomtom. Today, this journey is shared with an incredible global community of millions of travelers who follow along, learn from the road, and travel smarter because of real experiences, not theory.
For me, life isn’t about goals or checklists. It’s about chasing happiness, living in the moment, and not waiting for “someday.”

Looking for a small-scale accommodation in Tyrol, Austria? Do you enjoy personal attention from your hosts and on the other hand like to have privacy in your own cozy apartment? Surrounded by amazing things to do in Reutte Tyrol all just a stone throw away. Or a guided multiple day hiking trip? If you answered one or all these question with yes, then this is the right place for you so let me introduce you the Bauernlodge Höfen in Reutte, Tyrol.
Planning a Austrian weekend trip, I was not looking for the obvious locations like the most common city trips but wanted to experience something different in a small-scale accommodation surrounded by beautiful nature. One of my other pre-requisites was that the location needed to be on driving distance so that I could combine this weekend trip with a small road trip as these are always fun. All you need is a great friend and a full tank of gas. I wish that road trips could pay my bills… oh wait stop wishing, start doing with these Traveltomtom tips on how to become a professional travel blogger.
Well back to reality, during my internet search for an accommodation, which would meet my requirements, I was immediately attracted by the Bauernlodge in Höfen, Reutte (Tyrol). The distance to Tyrol is a perfect Europe road trip destination, from the south of the Netherlands it is 650 km so within 6,5 hours it can be reached.
Where is the Bauernlodge located?
The BauernLodge Alpin Apartments are located in West Tyrol, close to the Tyroler Alps and Nature Park Region Reutte, in a small town called Höfen. Höfen is a tiny friendly village with a nice view on the mountains and it is an ideal base for visiting several surrounding valleys. Within 5 minutes you can visit the Naturpark Tyroler Lech in Lechtal also called “Small Candada”, while within 20 minutes the options are numerous as you will reach the famous Zugspitze Arena, the lovely Tannheimertal and options to go up in the mountains. It is close to the German border and the nearest airport is Innsbruck Airport, 97 km from the accommodation.
First impression of the Bauernlodge
The BauernLodge is a small-scale accommodation in Tyrol, consisting out of 3 big apartments.
The lodge is 300 years old and for those who have been in Austria before you probably know style is not their priority, so you are maybe hesitant when I say this accommodation has style. Often the Austrian accommodations are at a great location, but the interior is most of the time very old-fashioned… well you will be pleasantly surprised what you will find at this lodge. In 2016 the old farm was rebuilt and transformed, now you will find a charming authentic atmosphere where old elements are combined with modern details and comfort. When arriving you will be welcomed by the wooden exterior and there is enough space to park your car on the driveway to the lodge.
During the winter the BauernLodge is also perfect for people who love to ski, snowboard or hike.
For beginners you can practice at slopes within a reach of 350 meter, the modern ski lift to ski areas Hahnenkamm Höfen is nearby within 1,3 km. If that does not suit your needs you can drive within 20 minutes to Tannheimertal (Grän, Nesselwängle, Tannheim) or the Zugspitz Arena (Ehrwald, Lermoos, Berwang) to explore a bigger region of ski slopes.
The outside area has beautiful relaxing areas with sofas, flowers, fire pits and candles. After a day of hiking, skiing or cycling, guests can relax in the garden or in the shared lounge area. Next to the lounge terrace you will find a tiny animal farm and options to play table tennis, badminton or jump high on the trampoline… okay the trampoline is only for kids but some of us never grow up, right? ; ) The view on the charming tiny church and on the background the mountains is great to start your day with and enjoy your own made breakfast at the terrace.
The Bauernlodge Apartments
The three luxurious apartments have been established in the old mews of the farm. We stayed at the ground level apartment which is the smallest (50 m2), the other two apartments are located on the first floor (75 m2). During the renovation they used as much as possible authentic elements combined with all comfort you need nowadays. Each apartment is equipped with a patio, a fully equipped kitchen with dishwasher, a fireplace, a seating area with a sofa, a flat-screen TV and a private bathroom with shower and a hair dryer.
The ground floor apartment has a cozy living and you can chill here after a full day of activities, read more about options for activities further in this blog, and cook your own meal in the open kitchen with all necessary equipment. The hosts have great eye attention to detail and I think Ingrid should share her talent for style with other Austrian accommodations, the throws and cushions with candles everywhere for cozy nights in make it complete.
Last but not least, I cannot write about the lodge without mentioning how clean it is… “douze points” for hygiene. I enjoyed good nights of rest during my 3 night-stay in the lovely bedroom which was suited for 4 persons and the shower was to-die-for; a large rain shower with ideal water pressure and temperature.
Amazing hospitality at Bauernlodge Höfen
Next to the apartments there is at the back of the building a “Stube” with a wooden stove. The ideal place for a drink, reading a book or playing a game. It is a place where you feel at home and the personal attention of Chris and Ingrid, the Dutch hosts who moved to Austria to fulfil their dream to live close to the mountains, really makes the difference. A few days a week they organize activities at the lodge for example marshmallows at the fire pit or offering a barbecue where you can meet up with the other guests and toast to the good life with good glass of wine…
During all seasons the surrounding is overwhelming. It was my first visit to Austria during spring, till now I only visited Austria in winter. Now I could finally see this different side of Austria, the perfect reason to visit Tyrol in May.
To be honest, when I was younger I was quite biased about holidays in Austria as the image in my head related to this was a bit boring. Well after this trip I can tell you the opposite is true… there are so many things to do in the Reutte region in Tyrol, I did not have enough time to see or do everything I wanted. I am in need for a second visit to Reutte. No doubt I would choose again to stay at the Bauernlodge as this place is transformed to a modern and warm place to stay during your holiday, where everything is there to experience the most enjoyable time… active, relaxing, refueling and not only an authentic style for the building but this also applies for the hosts…. While sharing their story about their decision to chase their dream in the Tyroler Alps, Austria, they were very open and easy to talk with…
The hosts are also focused on self-development and will be hosting a 5-day trip beginning of October to challenge yourself and focus on your personal growth, in collaboration with a professional training- and coaching agency.
When you are searching for an ideal accommodation in Austria with kids or if you want something different for your yearly friends’ trip, quality time for the 2 of you or when you are looking for a location for your company’s offsite meeting to brainstorm about your business’ strategy or coaching retreat… Bauernlodge Höfen offers it all, click here for their rates.
