I have traveled to Thailand more than 25 times and spent almost a full year exploring the country. From Bangkok to Chiang Mai, from long-distance bus rides down south to Krabi and the islands, and even places like Khao Sok National Park and Pai, I have tested SIM cards while being on the move.

One thing that still impresses me every time is how strong the mobile internet is. On most tourist routes you will have 5G coverage almost the entire way, including on trains, buses and on popular islands like Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, Koh Lanta, Koh Chang and even Koh Lipe.

Yes, if you want to travel comfortably in Thailand it is highly recommended to get a SIM card for Thailand. Although WiFi is widely available in hotels, cafés and restaurants, you will quickly notice that mobile data makes traveling around the country much easier.

Thailand is a country where you constantly rely on your phone. Ordering a Grab taxi, navigating with Google Maps, booking buses or ferries to the islands, checking train schedules, translating menus or simply staying in touch with friends and family all require a stable internet connection.

During my more than 25 trips to Thailand I have used mobile data everywhere from Bangkok and Chiang Mai to long bus rides through the countryside, train journeys across the country and even while island hopping in the south.

Thailand has one of the strongest mobile infrastructures in Southeast Asia and in most tourist areas you will have 4G and even 5G coverage almost everywhere.

This includes long distance routes like Bangkok to Chiang Mai, buses heading south towards Krabi and Chumphon and even popular islands such as Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, Koh Lanta and Koh Chang. Even when exploring more remote areas like Pai or parts of Khao Sok National Park you will often still have a strong signal.

Because of this excellent coverage, buying a prepaid SIM card in Thailand is usually the easiest and cheapest way to stay connected during your trip.

Where to buy a prepaid SIM card in Thailand

Buying a SIM card at Bangkok Airport

The easiest place to buy a prepaid SIM card in Thailand is right after landing at the airport. All international airports have official stores from the three Thai mobile operators: AIS, True and dtac.

You will find these SIM card kiosks directly in the arrival halls near baggage claim or right after customs. Staff will help you choose a data package, register your passport and activate the SIM card for you within a couple minutes.

Buying a tourist SIM card at the airport is usually slightly more expensive than in the city, but the convenience is often worth the small price difference.

If you don't want to buy a SIM card at the airport you can easily get one later in the city. Thailand has official mobile phone stores everywhere and they are very easy to find in all major tourist destinations.

Every large shopping mall in cities like Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi and Koh Samui has official AIS, True or dtac stores where you can buy a Thailand prepaid SIM card for tourists.

The advantage of buying your SIM card in an official store is that everything is very straightforward. Staff speak decent English, prices are fixed and they will activate the SIM card and data package for you on the spot.

If there is no line, you will be out in 5 minutes. You simply show your passport, choose a tourist SIM plan and within no-time your phone will be connected to the Thai mobile network.

Buying a SIM card from convenience stores

You can also buy a prepaid SIM card in convenience stores like 7-Eleven, Family Mart and Tesco Lotus. These stores are everywhere in Thailand and often open 24 hours.

However, buying a SIM card here is not always the most convenient option. Convenience stores usually sell SIM starter packs from True or dtac, but activation and choosing the correct data package can be confusing.

The registration process requires your passport and the staff often cannot help much with the activation steps. Most packages are displayed in Thai and you may have to set everything up yourself.

Because of this Traveltomtom generally recommends buying your tourist SIM card at the airport or in an official mobile operator store instead.

That said, convenience stores can still be useful if you arrive late at night or quickly need a SIM card while traveling.

Coverage across Thailand is excellent. On most popular travel routes you will have fast 4G or even 5G signal almost everywhere, whether you are exploring the unusual things to do in Bangkok, traveling through northern Thailand or island hopping in the south.

Below is a quick overview of the three mobile operators in Thailand.

AIS

AIS (Advanced Info Service) is the largest mobile network operator in Thailand and has long been known for its strong nationwide coverage.

• Excellent coverage in cities and rural areas
• Strong performance on travel routes and islands
• Very reliable 4G and 5G network
• Tourist SIM cards widely available at airports and shopping malls

AIS works very well in major tourist destinations such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi and Koh Samui, but also along long travel routes like the train connection between Chiang Mai and Bangkok.

On my most recent trip to Thailand I tested the AIS unlimited data tourist SIM for 15 days. Overall the experience was good, but not perfect.

Although I had a 5G signal almost everywhere, the data speed was not always consistent. Around 70% of the time data speeds were fast, but there were also moments when I had full 5G coverage and still experienced slower loading times, especially when using apps like Instagram and TikTok where videos sometimes buffered.

This was a bit surprising because AIS markets these plans as unlimited data at maximum speed (often advertised as 100 Mbps to 500 Mbps). In reality, performance can fluctuate depending on network congestion and location.

That said, for general travel use like navigation, messaging and browsing it still worked well. Just don’t expect flawless high-speed performance at all times, even when your phone shows full 5G signal.

True

TrueMove H, usually called True, is another major mobile network operator in Thailand and offers excellent coverage across the country.

• Second largest mobile operator in Thailand
• Very strong 4G and 5G coverage in cities
• Excellent performance in beach destinations and islands
• Large number of official retail stores
• Popular tourist SIM card packages

True has invested heavily in expanding its network over the past years and performs very well in tourist hotspots such as Phuket, Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Lanta.

dtac

dtac used to be the third major telecom operator in Thailand, but the company merged with True in 2023. Both brands now operate under the same company called True Corporation.

• Part of True Corporation after the 2023 merger
• Uses the combined infrastructure of the True network
• Very strong nationwide 4G and 5G coverage
• Tourist SIM cards widely available at airports
• Often competitive tourist data plans

The merger between True and dtac was a big shift in the Thai telecom market because it combined two large networks. For travelers this means that both True and dtac SIM cards now offer excellent coverage across Thailand.

Mobile internet in Thailand: 4G and 5G coverage

Thailand has one of the best mobile internet networks in Southeast Asia. Whether you are exploring big cities, traveling by train across the country or island hopping in the south, mobile coverage is extremely reliable.

Based on my personal experience traveling to Thailand more than 25 times and spending almost a full year in the country, I can confidently say that both the AIS network and the True / dtac network perform very well across the country.

On most tourist routes you will have strong 4G or even 5G signal almost everywhere.

Network coverage across Thailand

Mobile internet coverage in Thailand is excellent in all major travel destinations.

• Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket all have extremely strong 4G and 5G coverage.
• Train routes such as Bangkok to Chiang Mai maintain stable mobile signal for most of the journey.
• Long distance bus routes from Bangkok towards Krabi, Surat Thani and the southern islands also have continuous coverage.
• Popular islands such as Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, Koh Lanta and Koh Chang all have strong mobile networks.
• Even remote places like Koh Lipe in the far south now have excellent coverage.

During my trips I often work while traveling and use a lot of mobile data. Even on long train rides or overnight buses I was able to stream videos, upload videos to YouTube and work online without major connectivity issues.

Coverage in rural areas and national parks

Even when traveling outside major cities the mobile internet network in Thailand performs surprisingly well.

For example when exploring the mountains around Pai in Northern Thailand, I still had strong 4G and often even 5G signal while riding around the countryside by scooter.

• Beach destinations like Phuket and Krabi
• Even smaller islands such as Koh Lipe

This makes Thailand a great destination for travelers who rely heavily on mobile data for navigation, remote work, social media or streaming.

AIS sells its tourist packages under the name AIS Lucky Tourist SIM. These plans are widely available at airports and AIS stores across Thailand.

These tourist SIM cards include unlimited data at max speed on the AIS network, free calls within the AIS network, a 100 THB call bonus for domestic or international calls and access to AIS Super WiFi.

True tourist SIM prices

True offers several tourist SIM packages including the standard Thailand Tourist SIM and the Thailand Tourist Infinite SIM.

• 8 days – 499 THB
• 10 days – 349 THB
• 15 days – 699 THB
• 30 days – 1,199 THB

True tourist SIM plans include unlimited 5G internet at max speed, unlimited WiFi access and unlimited calls to all networks in Thailand. Some plans also include 100 THB calling credit for international calls.

dtac tourist SIM prices

dtac offers tourist packages under the name Happy Tourist SIM. These plans are available as both physical SIM cards and eSIM.

• 8 days – 299 THB (15 GB at max speed)
• 15 days – 599 THB (30 GB at max speed)

Both dtac tourist plans include unlimited internet usage at a reduces data speed after the high-speed allowance, free call credit and unlimited calls within the dtac network.

As you can see, tourist SIM cards in Thailand are affordable and there are plans available for short trips of a few days as well as longer stays of several weeks.

What is the best prepaid SIM card for tourists in Thailand?

The good news is that it is actually hard to choose a bad prepaid SIM card in Thailand. The country has one of the strongest mobile networks in Southeast Asia and both AIS and True / dtac perform very well across the country.

Based on my experience traveling to Thailand more than 25 times, most tourists will be perfectly fine with either AIS or True. Whether you are exploring Bangkok, heading north to Chiang Mai, traveling south to Krabi or island hopping between Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, you will generally have strong 4G and often even 5G coverage.

That said, after recently testing the AIS unlimited data tourist SIM for 15 days, I would add one important nuance.

Overall the experience was good, but it was definitely not perfect. Even though I had 5G signal almost everywhere, the data speed was not always as impressive as expected. Around 70% of the time the connection was fast, but there were also moments when I had full 5G coverage and still noticed slower performance, especially when using Instagram and TikTok where videos sometimes buffered.

That was a little disappointing because AIS sells these tourist SIM cards as unlimited data at maximum speed, often suggesting speeds of more than 100 Mbps up to 500 Mbps.

In real life, performance clearly still depends on network congestion and location. So while AIS remains one of the best networks in Thailand, do not expect flawless high-speed performance all the time just because your phone shows full 5G signal.

This is also why I would say the best tourist SIM card in Thailand is no longer just about which network has the strongest signal on paper. It is more about choosing the right package for your trip and setting realistic expectations. AIS still has a slight edge for rural travel and remote areas, but True is an equally strong alternative for most tourists and may deliver a very similar overall experience.

In the past buying a local prepaid SIM card in Thailand was always the cheapest option. But in recent years eSIM prices have dropped significantly and some plans are now very competitive compared to local tourist SIM cards.

Buying a prepaid SIM card in Thailand is very straightforward, but there are a few things tourists should know before getting one.

Below are some practical tips based on my own experiences traveling around Thailand and buying SIM cards many times over the years.

SIM card registration in Thailand

In the past it was possible to buy a prepaid SIM card in Thailand without showing identification. That is no longer the case.

Today all SIM cards must be registered with a passport. When buying a tourist SIM card the staff will take a copy of your passport and register the SIM card under your name.

You can register up to five SIM cards per passport. The registration process only takes a couple minutes and is normally handled directly by the shop staff.

Once activated, your SIM card will come with a Thai phone number starting with +66.

Free SIM cards in Thailand

You may sometimes see promotions offering a free SIM card in Thailand. Airlines or airport stands occasionally hand out these SIM cards to arriving travelers.

However, these SIM cards usually contain almost no usable data.

For example, Thai Airways has previously distributed dtac SIM cards that advertise free 8 GB of data, but in reality the SIM card initially only includes a very small amount of credit and you still need to top up to activate the full data package.

In other words, the SIM card itself may be free, but the actual mobile data plan is not.

Make sure your phone is unlocked

Before buying a prepaid SIM card for Thailand it is important that your phone is SIM unlocked.

If your phone is locked to your mobile provider from your home country, a Thai SIM card will not work. Most modern smartphones are unlocked, but if you are unsure it is best to check with your mobile provider before traveling.

Can tourists get a Thai phone number?
