On road trips around Tajikistan I often lost signal in remote areas and even in somewhat touristy places mobile internet can be slow or unreliable. Despite this huge MegaFon advertisement at DYU airport it is unfortunately still not possible to buy a SIM card at Dushanbe International Airport. I recently landed again at DYU Airport and there are still no SIM card shops for tourists inside the terminal. So if you are flying into Tajikistan, do not count on buying a local SIM card immediately after arrival.

My advice is simple: install a small Nomad eSIM for Tajikistan before your trip so you are connected right away for your first day in Dushanbe. Then, once you are settled in the city, go to an official mobile phone store and buy a local prepaid SIM card if you need more data for the rest of your trip.

Buying a SIM card in Dushanbe

The easiest and most reliable place to buy a SIM card in Tajikistan is in Dushanbe city center. All major mobile operators have their own stores and this is where you will get the best service. This is useful to know for overland travelers, but it does not automatically mean Tcell is the best SIM card for Tajikistan. It simply means it may be the easiest one to buy at the border.

Even though all providers offer 3G and 4G in theory, the reality on the ground is very different. Once you leave the main cities, it is completely normal to lose signal for long periods of time.

From my own experience traveling around Tajikistan multiple times, I can tell you that being offline is part of the journey. Whether you are driving towards the Afghanistan border or exploring smaller towns, do not expect continuous coverage. Even in some touristy areas mobile internet can be slow or unreliable.
