Dubai is actually one of the few places in the world where you could almost travel without a SIM card. Free WiFi is available in malls, hotels, restaurants and even at many public places, and it is usually fast and reliable.

However, once you step outside or start exploring Dubai city, having mobile data becomes essential. Think about ordering an Uber or Careem, using Google Maps, checking opening hours, or simply staying connected while on the beach where WiFi often doesn’t reach.

Also, if you are planning day trips to Abu Dhabi, the desert, or road trips across the UAE, you don’t want to rely on WiFi. Having your own data connection just makes traveling a lot easier and more flexible.

International data roaming plans are usually very expensive, so getting a prepaid SIM card or eSIM for Dubai is almost always the better option.

Where to buy a prepaid SIM card in Dubai

There are several ways to get a prepaid SIM card in Dubai, but for most tourists the easiest options are either at the airport on arrival or online via an eSIM.

Prices for tourist SIM cards are regulated and identical across the country, so where you buy mainly comes down to convenience.

Buying a SIM card at Dubai International Airport (DXB)

Buying a prepaid SIM card at Dubai International Airport is very straightforward and for most travelers the best place to get connected. No matter which terminal you arrive at, you will find multiple SIM card shops and all providers offer the same tourist SIM card prices.

As soon as you pass through immigration you will receive a free prepaid SIM card with 10 GB data valid for 24 hours. Just put it in your phone and you are connected instantly, which is perfect for your first hours in Dubai.

This free SIM card is handed out by the immigration officer. If you use the electronic gates you don’t automatically receive one, but you can ask one from the immigration supervisors behind the electronic gates and they will give you a SIM card.

After the 24 hours expire you need to register the SIM with your passport number and then manually activate a data package. This is done via SMS and you can pay by credit card. It is not complicated if you are tech-savvy, but it involves a couple extra steps and is not the most convenient option after a long flight.

If you prefer a hassle-free setup, then go straight to one of the official Du, Etisalat or Virgin Mobile shops at the airport. They will activate your tourist SIM card on the spot and you are ready to go within a few minutes.

At Dubai Airport you will also find resellers like Kitmytrip that sell SIM cards from Du and Etisalat. Prices are exactly the same as in the official shops, but they often try to attract customers with extra “benefits” like ride credits or discounts on tourist attractions.

Etisalat also promotes its Smiles app with various discounts, including offers like Careem ride credits.

Traveltomtom tested these promotions multiple times and my experience was honestly terrible. The advertised 100 AED Careem credit, for example, turned out to be only valid for new users. In the end I wasn’t able to properly use any of these offers.

From my personal experience, these “discounts” are mostly marketing. They often come with restrictions like off-peak hours, minimum spend requirements or only apply to new users. My advice is simple: don’t choose a SIM card based on these promotional offers, focus on the data plan itself.

From my experience, Terminal 1 can get quite busy and queues at SIM card shops are common. Terminals 2 and 3 are usually less crowded, but it always depends on arrival times.

I tested both networks multiple times while traveling around Dubai and the UAE and there is no noticeable difference in performance for tourists. Coverage is equally strong in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and other major cities.

Even when traveling between cities, for example on the highway from Dubai to Abu Dhabi or towards Fujairah, you will have continuous coverage with only occasional minor drops in more remote areas.

For tourists it doesn’t really matter which provider you choose. Both networks perform equally well, so your decision should be based on convenience and price rather than coverage.

Virgin Mobile focuses mainly on short-term and “unlimited” data plans. These plans are relatively expensive and usually subject to a fair usage policy, meaning speeds may be reduced after heavy usage.

Since Virgin Mobile operates on the Du network, there is no difference in coverage or performance compared to Du or Etisalat. Pricing is also similar or higher, so it is generally not the best value option for tourists.

Airhub usually offers the lowest prices, but based on my experience it can be a bit hit or miss. I have had good experiences, but also some issues, so keep in mind that cheaper does not always mean better.

• Uses Etisalat network
• Very stable and well-known provider

Airalo is one of the most established eSIM brands. It is slightly more expensive than Nomad, but offers a very stable and user-friendly experience.
