Buying a SIM card at V.C. Bird International Airport

There are no official Digicel or Flow stores at V.C. Bird International Airport (ANU). However, it is still possible to buy a SIM card right after arrival.

After passing immigration, before the baggage claim area, there is a duty-free shop that sells INET Mobile SIM cards. While this is the easiest way to get connected immediately, it is also by far the most expensive option. Expect to pay around $30 USD for just 1 GB of data, which is very poor value compared to local providers.

Because of this, I do not recommend buying a SIM card at the airport unless you really need instant connectivity. A much better option is to either go into the city or use an eSIM.

Buying a SIM card in Antigua city centers

The best place to buy a prepaid SIM card in Antigua is in St. John’s, the capital of the island. In the city center you will find official Digicel and Flow stores located close to each other on Market Street, making it easy to compare offers.

I bought my SIM card here and the process is straightforward, but be prepared to wait. The shops can get quite busy and it is not uncommon to stand in line for a while before it is your turn.

Once served, registration and activation only take a couple of minutes. You can pay with international credit cards and staff will help you set up your data plan on the spot.

Important: you need to bring a valid photo ID to buy a SIM card in Antigua and Barbuda. A passport is recommended, although in my case a European driver’s license was accepted as well.

During my trip I had mobile data connection almost everywhere I went on the island. From St. John’s to English Harbor and while exploring different beaches, I rarely experienced any issues staying connected.

Coverage is strongest in and around the capital St. John’s, near the airport and in popular resort areas along the coast. In these places you can expect fast and stable 4G speeds.
